The Stock Eiehange. NEW York, IVe. 31.—Today's market it-r stocks was vejar dull, and ret change* for the most part Were trivia! and are di vided among street gains and losses with out much semblance of consistency cr '.'£ ,• T?l ® local traction securities were the favorites, as ha* been the case for Tnaoy days past, and they rose at one time sharply above last night's level, under the belief that taey would benefit even if the propos-d rapid transit project was con summated. Sugar was also a strong feat ure and rose at one time l s *c, but held only a fraction of that amount. News this morning from foreign ex changes dissipated all apprehension caused by yesterday's reports that the British naval reserves had been ordered out. Brit ish consols advanced a fraction in London, an unfailing barometer of a peaceful out look. The firmness of the wheat market also relieved the uneasiness in speculative circles over the outcome of the great De cember deal. The bank statement was ds regarded, as it is so involved with tne Union Paclfl.? operation as to offer no indi cation of the drift of teneral conditions. The somewhat contradictory firmness of money and hardness of foreign exchange continued today, though both markets were very dull. The sub-treasury had ll 44A.742 to pay at the ensuring house today, again reflecting the continuing replenish ment of the money market from that source. There was a disposition to make much of the exceedingly favorable November statement of the Pennsylvania system. The increase In gross earnings for the whole system over November of last year ■was $1,492,400. and the Increase In r.et was $7£5.300. The has b *en one of dullness on the stock mf»rk-t. and outside of a few specialties of a highly speculative charac ter almost apathetic. Tradlrg has been in the hands of professional room traders, and outside interest has been Insignificant. Various causes have contributed to th* dullness. The holiday season has kept many dealers out of the markets. Dealers in the market have the habit common to all business men of closing up all accounts with the end of the year as far as possible, and of taking account of business before entering on new ventures. There has t* en liquidation of speculative accounts during the week in accordance with this custom, the effect of which has b- en chiefly felt in the specialties recently the favorites In speculation. Profit-taking In the stocks of local corpo rations caused some sharp recessions in values, but later developments have result ed In recoveries. The decisive factor in re stricting speculation, however, has be<-t\ the stiffness of rates for money and the apprehension that has grown less and less as the week progressed. Monday's pay ments to the government bv the Union Pa ciflc syndicate of almost sS,sfiO.Qt!o necessi tated an extensive shifting of loans, and consequent disturbance of the money mar ket. which even the elaborate precautions of the binks and the gove-rnment were not wholly successful In averting. Of the Union Pacific payments $4 000.000 was left on de posit in New York banks, and the 300 •») paid Into the treasury was more than off set by amounis paid out on account of Pi clflc bond redemptions on Monday and Tuesday. The money market has been re plenished by additional amounts on this account each day of the week, and al though rates for money have been pretty stiff there has been no stringency. The hardening of exchange, which be ame pro nounced on Thursday, reflects the confi dence that rates for money will work to an easier basis soon after the first of the year. Expert estimates of the amounts to be dis bursed on January dividends and interest make them for New York $90,000,000; for Boston $13,000,000, and f r Philadelphia. sKu>>'.ooo.
