SEATTLE, WASHINGTON", SUNDAY, MARCH 6, 1898. WTTHCHA* LACE ( I RT AIJTS, Fall Lnftk, Tomorrow. 10 A. N. Only, 29e Pi. There were several bright spots in the week Just ended, which was an exception ally and necessarily dull one. To society the restrictions of Lent come with over powering force, and they eagerly snatch at the last lingering joys of the worldly season. The mortification of the flesh and the suppression of the desires of their hearts are exercises that are met with wry faces and rebellious spirits. The opening lecture of a series on "Dante" by Rev. PL H. Gowcn, in Mrs. J. C. Haines' drawing room on Tuesday afternoon, was the only afffcir in which any number of society people got togeth er. The young ladies of the younger set had rather a gayer week than usual, owing to affairs given in honor of the presence cf Miss Ctancy, of Tacoma, and the departure of Miss Jackson for her home in Boston. The Intellectual work laid out by society people for the six weeks of Lent has hardly commenced to be a burden, but golf and the wheel claimed considerable of the time rhat was to have been devoted to books. The women of society are still very faithful about attending the Lenten religious services. K* ❖ ❖ Mr. Ellis E.
