Some professional traders w-re skeptical about the character of the buying of the two days, regarding St as a maneuver to attract outside buying to realize on. and they attempted to check the advanc ing ten leccy by renewing yesterday's at tack on the coalers. This group of stocks proved easy v: rims on account of the i m-jralixed condition of the anthracite in dustry, on account of the increasing com petition of gas as fuel and the extreme cheapness of bituminous coal. Tridents like these tend to confuse scrumte analy sis. bat the general trend of the statement is about u expected. The heavy collec tions of checks g;ven for small subscrip tions are causing a loss to the bsnks <n treasury On the other hand, the treasury Is making unusua.'y heavy payments on war account, but its receipts for :be reason nimed. ar*> in evcess of diabu-«ements. Th* effect is to reduce *he surplus of the local banks, and that is what the statement shows. The loss has teen greater than expected, f jr the banks have gsinei through the in terior movem-»nt. The flow of cash to New Tork however, has passed its maxi mum and domestic exc!"ange has declined sharply at interior centers. The situation can only be described as favorable. The surplus reserve® of the ban.us are in ex ccss of ISi/'OO.O'.ift. and while the award of the new loan this week will create more or less confusion, nothing more than a temporary du«urbinee 4s anticipated. The fact that*rot much over one-four:h of th<* whole amount has been taken In J'**) bonds or under, makes it easy for the treasury to regulate the period of payments for larger subscriptions, in instai.meii'j so separated as to nurumUe the effect on the money market.
