22 J ET those say to the contrary who tottt, the church-going portion of the peo ple believe that the spirit of Christmas is growing, end that each succeeding year sees greater attention paid to the distinct ively religious side of the celebration of the 35th of December. This notable holiday, occurring almost at the end of the cfbd calendar, is the first great day of the Christian year, and divides h>ith Easter the distinction of being the Church'; most foyous festfbal. —* The churches of Seattle, without regard to stct, hfte perfected plans to make the celebration of Christmas this season sur pass any hitherto known in this city. Graceful adornment of the church edi fices, exceptionally fine and appropriate music, and Instrumental, and de vout and enthusiastic participation by large congregations, will combine to make Christmas exercises both inspiring and beautiful. The programmes of the prin cipal churches, as far as they have been announced, is given below, m ft iK FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH. CHE Christmas exercises at the First Baptist church. SMITH, pastor of the First Christian church, at Eighth avenue and Bell street, will conduct preach ing services at U a. rn. and 7:30 p. m. today, and ihe Sunday school and T. V. S. C. E. meetings will occur at th« usual hours of 12:50 and 6:15 p. m. Alt the services of the' day will have special refer ence to Christmas. f>'- if % ST. MARK'S (PHOTESTAKT EPIS COPAL). St. MARK'S church Is entering Into the spirit of Christmas !n a very enthu siastic manner, both in her church decoration and in the musical pro grammes for her services. From the apes of the chancel wreaths of evergreen are suspended toward the body of the church and points at regular intervals in the Sides of the chancel, the walla of which are also encircled with festoons of {greens. A combination of green and red ends to the front unusual beauty, smll&x gracefully forming a veil-like background for the crown and clusters of red. A wealth of choice flowers adds to- the whole a finishing touch that they alone can give. In the body of the church arches of ever green over the windows complete the gen eral design, in the execution of which St. Mark's church has been made beautiful in her Christmas robe. A musical service for the children at 7 o'clock Sunday evening opens the Chrlst mas services, the grandest of which will undoubtedly be Moxart's Seventh Mass, which will be rendered by the choir at the midnight service ushering in Christmas day.
