Driven to Other Cities to tbe Detriment of Seattle's Growth—Will Be Investigated. The owners of the Seattle tide lands, who are protesting against an extension of time being granted to the Seattle and Washington Waterway Company have appealed to the Manufacturers Asso ciation of this city for aid In their fight At the regular bi-weekly meeting of the association last night, C. 1! Russell, repre senting the owners, addressed the members and asked them to Investigate the matter. As a result, a oommltteo consisting of George W. Kumroer, J. W. Kahle anJ Her man Hchocken. wus appointed to make tha Investigation. Mr, Bussell laid great stress on the fact thiit an extension of time to the water way company, would menace the growth of the manufacturing Interests of Seattle. He pointed out the lack of room for fac tories here, owing to the tide lands being unavailable for their use, and cited num erous Instances where capltall-t., who were desirous of establishing large plants In Seattle, were forced to go to Everett ;,nd other Bound cities for locations. The tying up of the tide lands, he declared, would not only hurt th« manufacturing Interests of the city, but also other local Industries. The Individual owners. Mr Russell said, would he able to fill up their holdings much cheaper than the price the waterway company would charge for the work. Many of them, he staled, were eager to go ahead on their own account, but would not be able to do so If the extension was granted to the company. It was ridiculous, he said, that capitalists should be driven to other cities, while there were hundreds of suitable locations or. the tide lands. The address was very favorably received by the members of the association. On® of them said, after the meeting: "We never before exactly realised the great Importance this question Is to our city. We will look Into the matter at once." The committee appointed to look Into the matter will make Its report June 7. Letters were read at the meeting from Senator Foster and Congressmen Jones and Cushman, relative to the association's resolutions on the pure food bill, known as senate bill No. 4047, which were for warded to Washington, D. C., some time ago. Tlie association discussed the present condition of trade between the Orient and the Pnlted Rtatev A delegation, headed by YV. H. Middle ton, was received from the Western Cen tral I-abor Union. A willingness to co operate with the Manufacturers' Asso ciation In building tip the factory Interests In Seattle was expressed by the delegates. The association appointed a committee to confer with the labor unions on the sub ject. WILL HONOR NATION'S DFAD l*«fellr ffrhnol (lilldren #o Be Ari dreised by Npeakeri from G. A. State's Attorney File* n Letter From the lnnpeetor In Which lie State* the Profensor Mor»e Wn* Con demned Three .Month* Before Sold The case of the *tate vs. Capt. F. W. Handy, in which the defendant is ac cused of obtaining a large sum of money by false pretenses from Dr. J. Eugem Jordan for the sale of an alleged worth less steamship, did not proceed to trial when it was called in the criminal de partment of the superior court yesterday morning. Instead, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Hart tiled a sensational letter from Marine Inspector Holies, of San Francisco, accompanied by an applica tion for a continuance, in which it is attempted to show that three months prior to the time that Handy is claimed to have represented to Jordan that the vessel was in first-class condition, and so pronounced by the government in spectors, she had been condemned as ab solutely worthless. After Mr. Hart had addressed the court, stating that Inspector Holies, up on whom he had depended to bo present as a witness for the purpose of proving the condition of the Professor Morse, could not be present at the trial. Handy s attorneys entered a vigorous protest against further continuance, claiming the usual statutory grounds and negligence on the part of the prosecution in failing to properly prepare Its case. The state's attorney told the court that It was the desire of the prosecution to send Robert Moran or some other com petent Inspector to San Francisco for the purpose of inspecting the vessel as to her condition In order that the state's contention that she was a worthless hulk might be maintained when the mattei was gone Into. Judge Benson granted a continuance until June 4, and it is understood that Mr. Moran or some competent person to bo designated by him. will proceed at once to San Francisco and there make a technical marine survey and Inspec tion of the boat. Proseh, the well-known Sfattle pioneer, received a letter yester day that took his memory bark to the early days on Puget Sound. It was an invitation written in Chinook, from J. A. We want you to come and bring all your family " Mr. Prosch, not to be outdone, yester day penned the following letter, the spell ing in which it will be noticed has in some places a more ancient appearance than the invitation's: "Tsehalalitch, May 24.
