PIONEERING UNDER DIFFI CULTIES. The farmers of Walla Walla and . djacent valleyn eaat of the* Cascades can only realize 84 cents a btixhel for their wheat when it arrives in Portland. They pay M\ cents. Thus all the margin left to the producer after delivery i* the beggarly sum of 38 cents j<er bushel. Allow - ing 30 bushels to the a*'re a.s an ave rage, that would give sll lo as the groMK money product of an acre, wbieh after deducting the necessary e&jteuses e>f planting, harvesting, marketing, interest, wear of machine ry and contingeiirit M, must leave a verj «mall # surplus b»r the average farmer to live on. • SiijHfadded to ail this, the trans {►ortaliou companieH of Jute have made a discrimination in favor of freight into the country and against exports, thus practically increasing the burden of the farmers in order to make an additional premium on the wares of the Oregon merchants. Certainly this look* a little like un fairness. And yet our misguided countrymen in that section (if the newspa|H'rs that state these facts rep resent, the real sentiment of the peo ple,} are anxious to break the last link that binds them to independency by annexation to Oregon. We know not by what witchery the Oregon Steam Navigation Company could have ]s?rsuaded them thus pronely to their hands t » the eternal gyves olihat manopolv. If instead, «>ur over there will take hold'with a will and help their com c o , cni m*h road, "we may all IK* happy yet." Their real and only emancipation lien in that road. II they will insist on lwitig tied to the apron-string of that alien parent, to the disregard of their natural ties and t<mporul in terests, they cannot complain at what ever meager crumbs may Iw thrown them. Thirty miles of road are already built in the direction <»f tin' Sound, at that end, while the present season will see the completion of fifteen miles on this end. If thev will join forces with the public spirited busi ness men on this side, in the interest of cheap railroad connection lietween the two sections, and float even SIOO,- iNNI worth of stock each vear, one half on each side, the road will be an accomplished fact in a shorter time than would Is* anticipated. FEOM OUH TRAVEL ING COERES POITDEHT. From San Francisco to Seattle. SEATTLE, July - 1 =t, lsiti. Ed. Ixtklugexcer Monday, July l(»th, wo left San Franciseo on the steamer Dikota bound for VictorU, ;md the Sound. The seen .* at th-» w'aarf of the Pacific M*il Steamship Company, in which line the Dakctt bjloDgs, was the USUAI one of bustle and confusion. Boxes, b«les, packages, aud 'baggage in apj>arently inexplicable disonler, everybody jost ling an 1 crowdiug, *ud hurrying to get his or her business concluded and bag gage and fr»i«ht l«.»»r.l before tho hour of failing; t'ae officers giving orders in loud mid comman ling tones, Hitd the {K>or Chinamt u working like b avers, with truck ;ind l>y hand, lugging the promiscuous mtss on U).ud. The steamer was to >«il at 12 M., but did not get away until an hour later. The day was a bright and sunny our, one of those gems of California climate which are sometimes seen even in Sau Frau cisco, but which is in that locality an exception and not the rule, and as we stepped on board where we found many familiar faces and kindly greetings, aud then looking around us we saw a plea*i*ntly smiling collection cf passen gers all apparently in good spirits, we felt that the voyage was to be a pros perous one uiid full of pleasant remin iscences. At last we got under way, and as we came out of the harbor, through the GoMen Gate, and past the heads, we tound no fog, a d the sea and the inner bar quite smooth. But as we came far ther out and crossed the outer bar, and two hours later passed Point Keyes, we found the sea quite rough, and a strong head wind. ThU continued for about forty-eight hours, and as the ship was, in sailor parlance, " light," that is to say with b*U a s-mall cargo on board, and as we were butting with a head long sea, of course the progress was slow, and many of the passengers were quite sick. But after passing Cape Mendocino the sea bectuie macU r..r aflay, nl two o'clock, we crossed thu latitude of the Columbia river, and reached the cape on Friday niorn iug at eight o'clock, where we fo md some fug and a slight rain. We reached Ksquimalt at half-past two p. M:, where we discharged freight and pas seugers, and left at midnight, arriving at Seattle at 12:30 p. M., the next day. Glad to again re ich home after our ex tended journey The Dakota is a Hue ship, very easy in the sea, with but little motion and perfectly sea worthy so ft*r as our limited judgment can tell. The people should see to it that this line receive such a support as to insure its continuance. It is a big tiling for Puget Sound that we have direct steam communicMtion with San Francisco, and we sli »uld not »Uow our Selfishness to NO far control us as to pave the ways for a discontinuance of this very con venient means of communication and t ravel. Wheu we came on b »ard the Dakota, at San Francisco, we were pleased to see the smiling countenance of Otis Freeman, K»q , agent of the Steamship Company for Puget Sound, and to learn that he was to accompany us on the up ward trip. It is my conviction that Mr Freeman is the right man in the right place. Cpou our arrival in Seattle—our home—the place t.» which, in all our wanderings, our !>»•*■ t has turned with longing—our " Mecca," our shrine of worship—wo were mere than proud of the progress :md improvement shown by our people. We had told strangers that our pleasant little hillside citv was growing, and that its future prom ise! to be brilliant. Hut we had not expected that the day hid already dawned, th it the brilliancy of its future greatness had already cast the slanting ra\ s of its rising sun athwart the h ri/'>ti. Uut these truths came to us with more than common force when we ga/td »t the city, from the deck «»f the -termer, and MW the many new »-*i d i tvs of cur growing, metropolitan projiortion* Mas.- c»»uvietion* wtie IIH re fottihie thao ev. r, when after lan ding, we <4w the particular im provements going on.
