A Statement by CaptSeabury
CALIFORNIA.
SAN FRANCISCO, (Jet. 3 -About teu
o'clock this morning the city was
startled by a report that the l'acific
Mall ftteaiuatilp Go's, meaiuei fioiu Vic
toria and Puget Sound, was on fire off
the heads. Tugs were at once dis
patched to her assistance, and about an
hour later she made her appearance
coining lip the channel. Many who
bad beard the news flocked to Tele
graph Hill and other favorable
jioints to witness the coming. Five
tugs that surrounded her, urging her
onward with all possible speed, while
the engines of the steamer were also
working to the full power of her for
ward boilers, the after set being evi
dently inactive, and the fire appearing
to be in their immediate vicinity. Huge
volumes of smoke poured from the deck
and just aft of the paddle boxes, and
from every port torward and -aft smoke
was also curling. The passengers were
.Mostly grouped on the forward deck,
but no confusion was visible and every
thing seemed to lie carried forward in
an orderly manner. Arriving off North
Point, the course of the ship changed,
a:id instead of standing off towards
Go»t Island, and making a wide circuit
outside of the ships anchored in
the channel her head was imme
diately swung sharply around and
she passed rapidly along the city front
until she reached the vicinity of the
mail dock. There the passengers were
Uuded and the ship was then grounded
on the uiud fiats near by. It has I wen
ascertained that the fire was discovered
la-t night nl>out 12 o'clock in the coal
hunkers. Beyond that little has l>eea
1 learned. The officers of th» cvupaay
estimate that the damage is not gnat
and the fire is extinguished, liut from
the haste made in leaching the ship
and the smoke that enveloped her, it
seems j»o>sihle that the damage must b»
considerable The Constitution had on
board about fifty passengers, some $70,-
000 in treasure and a general cargo.
This was her first trip on the Victoria
route, previous to which she hud been
laid up for some time. One of the tire
meti My* he discovered the fire al>o»t
five o'clock this morning. It «M then
jin the vicinity of the smokestacks. An
alarm was turned on l*»t no confu
■ion ensued, the crew going <|ui«s<ly
to their stations. The water was turned
on. and every «ff<>rt made to control
; tlte fire. The alter ls>ilers soon bad to
he ataudoned. Tlie l»oat* were then
lowered and guns lired. and prepara
tions made to leave the ship i' neces
sary. The passengers acted with great
coolness, and sat down and breakfasted
I as though nothing bed happened out
of the ordinary routine. Tb« ship was
off Point Heyes when the fire was d»s
covered, and the liest possible time *s s
made for port. The sea was very
smooth, but the fog w*s so thick that
progress was somewhat delayed. On
arriving iu the harbor the steamer was
i at onoe scuttled and grounded on M»-

gage being taken off on tugs. Several
tugs then surrounded her, and at»out
twenty streams were poured in the
ea!>in and bold. Six holes were cut in
her port side hold under the cabin
tl(x»r, and streams poured in. Five
holes were rut iu the starboard
side and water injected into that
quarter. The staterooms were fii>oded
for two feet and holes bored
through the floor leaving the water to
drain down to where the tire was sup
posed to IK*; as the passengers left the
steamer the flumes burst out for the
first time, coming up the ventilators
and sky-lights.
The Constitution was built in New
York in the year 1861. She is 842 feet
long, 44 feet beam, nnd 31 feet hold.
Is built of oak, with iron and copper
fastenings ; her draft is 18 feet ; tons
register, 4,100. HAS accommodation

ners This vessel was re-coppered in
1 Sf?H. Her model is M, ami she has :i
carrying capacity of 2,000 tons freight
and 1,000 tons coal.
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. .>— A* soon a*
the'flames were discovered coiuiug up
through the ventilators aud skv-liglits
water was t'trown down tL •»« places
and the flauies subdued. It wa-i im
possible to penetrate the lower portion
of the vessel a* the bops, of which there
were 227 bales on board, were on fire
and emitting dense suffocating smoke.
Now and again a blaze could be seen
from above tn iudicate the exact loca
tion of the fire. Chief Scannell arrived
at 11:30, and at 12 the steamer had
listed to starboard and was gradually
settling that way at a quarter past one.
A consultation was held between Chief
Scannell and the officers of the compa
uy and vessel, when it was ueterininea
that as the shell of the hull was on fire,
anil as it would be impossible to put
out the flames among the bops, the
only resource was to scuttle her. A
boat was then brought around astern
and men proceeded to cut boles in her
hold. The ventilators were cut in the
cabin at the same time, and streams of
water poured down. The ship slowly
settled down to her guards, when she
rested on the Itottoui all the afternoon
and the water poured steadily into her
until she was full to within two or three
feet of her main deck and the fire
drowned out. No examination is pos
sible at preseut, but the tire seems to
have been confined to that portion of
the hold and bet ween decks al .aft the
paddle boxes.
Capt. Seabury's Statement.
Capt Staburv gives the follow
ing account "At o'clock this
morning \v« sighted Point lieycs; at
5:;K>, while the crew were washing
the decks a thick smoke was observed
coming up through the after ventilators
nnd around the funnel, where it ap
peared accompanied by tongues of
flames I had the lire alarm imme
diately sounded, the ventilators closed,
and tinned in a stream of water into
the afterhoid, judging the tire wis
among the coals in that hold, there
were five jets of steam turned down,
hut we found the ship slowing down,
owing to exhaustion of steaiu in the
Itoiler*. About 0, a. ma thick fog
settled down, the ship being then, as
judged, abreast of Point Heycs. The
smoke having invaded the after saloon,
the passengers had to go to the upper
deck. They liehavea admirably ; not
the slightest fright, confusion or anxiety
being diisplayed by man, woman or
child. The crew fought the tire inch
by inch, and worked hard to prevent it
spreading to the forward p-irt of the
ship. In spite of their effort* however!
the alter (toilers were mjou rendered
useless, men not t<ein«r able to stand by
i them owing to smoke, we were then
forced to proceed with only such steam
us we got from our forward boilers giv

managed to give passenger* their
usual breakfast, though the saloon floor
was covered with water and the room

Famspn praise the skill and
