Term* Tare* Dalian par aa aam. la adrarcc: othTVta*. t4.ee. Ofleiil Prmw of King County. Monday, Jan. 21, 1878. UPWARD TENDENCY IN BBEF The great exodus of live cattle to the Eastern market from the prairies of Yakima, Columbia, Whitman and Wal la counties, has been the means of low eriag the price of beet iu New ork to such an extant that the great Kan tacky breeders like Groom, Van Meter, and Grigsby bar* l»een driven into bankruptcy by the vain effort to com peta with the paxtares of Oregon and Washington Territory. The droves of cattle ere«now being collected so as to be started early that they may lje across the Humboldt before the hot weather •eta in. We give the recent operations of two large buyers now in Yakima county, purchasing cattle which they will begin driving from Walla Walla to Kalton: LASO & RYAK's BAHD. Hnntington & Blinn 600 P. J. Flint 300 S«mael Cbappell 40 William Matters 60 8. W. Carey 18 Qm. H. Hall 40 J. A. Splawn 30 W. L. Splawn TO Total 1,143 bAMJUO BROTHERS Piab & Walker 350 William Grant .250 Myron Lock wood 150 Total 750 So it will be seen that these two bands, which are not yet complete, number together 1,898 head and they hare been purchased entirely from the South side of the Yakima river. On the north kide, about Hwek, Pasbastin and Wenatcbie, there are many, fine stock Ikl ui/which will sell all their marketable cattle this year, so that the number of beeves driven oat this year will not fall far short of 10,000 bead of cattle over two years old. The prices paid there have been about #l3 each for twO-year olds ; $lB for three year olds; $22 for four-year-elds and $24 for cattle over four years Lang & Kyan claim to have bought cheaper than this, but nobody believes it. Thie looks very well for Yakima county, bat very bad for King, which has no pastures of her own and has to get all her beef froin across the mouu- tains. 80 long as our butchers can pur chase tbeir steers ou the west tide of the Columbia river, they can afford to drive theni to (Seattle, and sell the beef at three cents per pound nett to the Urge mill companies.. But the reel danger is that all Jtio large cattle will lie bought up and beef become so scarce that wholesale batchers here oan* not make more than a bare living to sell at five cents. Already, on* of our largest bntohering firm contemplates retiring from the business, olealy fore seeing that with the great Eastern de mand for cattle, the price on foot will soon become so great as to leave no margin for slaughtering here, even at a large advance upon the present figures. This would increase the cost of living without any corresponding advance in wagee to meet it. The men who have got rich on Puget Sound have done so not from high wages, but from cheap living; and with the present depressed condition of the coal and lumber mar kets, we naturally feel alarmed at any thing that increases the goat of a staple article of family food A DIVXDMD HOUBS. The House of Hapeburg, holding the throne of the Austrian Empire, has never pnsstsssd any remarkable ele ments of strength in the century which ie fast approaching its close. The Magyar war of 1849, by which it crush ed Hungary into subjection, was ao» complished more through the indiffer ence of England and the Ojttq) gteA powers, than from any positive power of the Austrian Empire. This arose mainly from the fact that Hungary was not a maritime nation and bad no seaports in which the interest of Eng lish, French or Prussian commerce were likely to be jeopardised. Later came the 111-eta rred expedition to Mexico, with Baaaine's unsneesasfnl attempt to seat Maxmillien upon the vacant throne of The disgraceful and humiliating retreat of the French furors, leaving the unlocky Austrian prince to Ik> »tu<t like a dog at Queretaro, is still fresh in the memories of our renders. And the tMt thnt Aus tria suffered that offence to remain on paehheif. evidenoee the fact that eke lay in wholesome fear of A series, and dared not assfte in the matter. Now it would seem as if the Empire ie badly divided in public sentiment upon the Turko-Russian war. That portion of the Empire lyiag next to Prussia is in favor of peace, while the Sclavonic element in the south fav«*rs the Russian tide ofrthe question; and to the east, the Hungarian population sympathize deeply with Turkey, re men be ring with resent aent the inter ference in the Maygan' last straggle for liberty under the leadership of , Kossuth. All thU shows a discordance and turbulence within her borders that must cause trouble ere long. So long as the Oermau Empire befriends Aus tria she is safe, but should Bismark ever desire to extend the domain of ! Kaiser William to the Danube, he 'could easily accomplish it. Napoleon said that the strength of Switserlaod uy in her weakness; it will yet be . shown that the power of Austria con -1 sists mainly in the indifference of the other great nations of Europe. Wiiex a State cornea into the Union sho is allowed all the swamp, over flowed and tide lands, within her bor ders as the nucleus of an irreducible school fund. There are in the coon ties of Snohomish and Whatcom, thous and of acres of tide lands in process of reclamation which are the only possess ions of their owners; and if they should be deprived of then , they would be ruined financially. We hope that the fremera of oar Constitution will not overlook this point and make an ex ception providing that all who have improved or reclaimed tide lands pur chased from the Federal Government shall be entitled to a quit-claim deed from the State to sach land without farther espenn than the oost of a deed- TELEGRAPHIC.
