DULY INTELLIGENCER. Saturday, June 22, 1878. MANY of the great men of history have been of short stature, from the days of that ancient philosopher who, as the story goes, was so diminutive that he 1 ad to carry lead in bi« pockets to prevent his being blown away. Canute, the Groat, for example, was a singularly small man ; Napoleon too, waf little; Nelson had DO height to boast of; and the great Conde was short enough. Hildebrand— Gregory the Seventh—the mightiest of all the Popes, was also quite a diminutive per son Then among men of letters, poets and philosophers, Montaigne, the es sayist, was little ;BO was Pope— *' a little crooked thing that asks ques tions so was Dryden ;so w»s Doctor Watts, who insisted, as we all know, on the mind being the stature of the man ; and so was Scarron, who, alluding once to his ill health and bis diminutive size, called himself an " abridgement of human miseries." Will any one, after such names as these—and the list might be indefinitely extended—look down ou little men with disdain ? THE ACCUMULATION OP PROPERTY— The whole outcry against the accum ulation of property is absurd upon the face of it. The average of property in this country is SI,OOO to each person, from #'<,ooo to $(>,000 to each family, while the middle classes, who comprise the voting majority of the American people, will average from #2,000 to SIO,OOO. The class between $ 10,000 and #100,()00 is not at all nu merous, and those worth over SIOO,OOO are comparatively few. Even if it were not absurd, bow do these communist leaders propose to limit the Astors to one house, the Vanaerbilts to one share of railroad stock, and the Stewarts to one little retail shop with a single clerk, without limiting the right to accumu late to every other person in the United States?— Cfiicajo Tribune St. Louis Tune*: One of the marvels of this age of emigration and enterprise is the rapid settlement of the Yellow stone Valley. At the point on Tongue Kiver where Gen. Miles encamped in 1870, there is a town with a population of nearly 1,000. Tho battle fields of Custer and his men are occupied by farmers, and the couatry from which Sitting Hull was driven is in the peace ful possession of the pioneers of a civi lization against which such tremendous tragedies os the Custer Massacre count »-> nothing.
