Far, fur away beside the foam, A little maiden had her home: And princes wooed her, rich and cay, lint still she lightly said them nay: She cared not it they came or went, With her humble home content, For things were not as now, you know, Long ago, and long ago. Her father oft would musing stand, And hold his little maideu's hand! And, pointing cry, "From o'er the sea fine day my woe will come to me." And whisper when he shook his head, "What shall I do when she is wed?" He loved her so, he loved her so, Long, and loffg, and long ago. A lover came o'er the sea one day, And stole her simple heart away! But when she saw her father's tears, And thought of all his after years, "Go back across the sea," she cried, And wept, "I cannot be thy bride." For things were uot as now, you know, Long, and long, and long ago. i l Shu watched upon the bridge next day, ! Her bonny lovers sail away She drops her ring into the foam, And then at twilight wandered home; She found her father sitting there. She wept and kisssed his silver hair; i She loved them both, she loved theiu eo, Long, and loug, and long ago. An Ohio Borgia. REMARKABLE CASE OK ALLEGED POIS ONING—A SCHOOLMISTRESS ACCUSED. At Fremont, Ohio, an alleged case of attempted poisoning has greatly ex cited the community. The person ac cused is a lady who has for some time taught in the public school. The Cleveland ll> raid, May 23, publishes an accouut of an interview with her in person as follows . Miss Smith's face has been des cribed as "not handsome,' which is true enough, and yet her face is not re pulsive. Her eyes are large and deep blue aud very prominent, and their lids at at rt*d and swollen. Her (hm is small and her teeth large and white. Her lip* are thiu and al most transparent and but partly cover her front teeth, giving her a strange appearance. The description is not flattering, but for all this she does not strike one for her homeliness, and by school children she is greatly liked. "1 have not much to say,' she said. 'I have no confession to make, for I have nothing to confess.' This was said voluntarily, and is probably ex plained bv the following :—'My coun sel desire me to converse with no one upon this subject, and I prefer not to. I am innocent ; 1 aiu not guilty.' "I AM NOT A MURDERESS.' I told her that 1 had visited her old room and seen her scholars. 'I shall never teach thein again,' said she rather mournfully, 'for circumstances are all against me. I will try and bear up the best I can, though, for I have others to live for, you know, as well as myself.' In regard to her ar rest she said she was never mom sur prised in her life, and that if she had fallen down dead in the street her friends would not have bean more completely surprised. She was not in clined to talk much, and her voice it so small and plaintive, her appearance and manuer so restricting, that she is hard to converse with, especially when under instructions of silence. Notic eing that the reporter was looking in tently at her, she inquired if she look ed much like a murderess, aud said most pitiflly, "Oh, believe me I am not.' THE POISONING LOT. Thu history of the alleged guilt, as sketched in tbe Cleveland Herald , is as fi HOWS : A year a<;o lust Christmas Mr. Stine was recipient of a handsome cigar case filled with fine cirars. He was enjoy ing 1111 evening at cards with some gentlemen friends, when some one lit a and he said, 'Well, I guess I can do that much myself,' or some thing to that effect, at the same time drawing one of the cigars from his case and pasing the others around. He bit the end of one and lit it, when he was obliged to throw it away from its ex treme bitterness. The effect was the same in all. The gentlemen could not stand the taste and the cigars were un wrapped, when between the leaves was found a white powder. Mr. Stint then supposed .that a joke was being played upon him and thought that the powder was quinine. Another peculiar case ©ecured in Fehuary last Mr. Stiue's son William, a child of ten years, g<x?s to a school room adjoining that of Miss Smith. He is a healthy, robust lad, never hav ing been sick since his infancy and is to-day th-.» very picture of health. Much to his parents' surprise he was, on the day above stated, brought homo in spasms. For many hours the doc tor labored with hitn, treating him for tits, or thinking some oraiu disease had l>ecn contracted by overwork. His father savs bis paroxysms were most fearful. He would on a sudden stif fen oat as oold and inflexible as death, •very muscle in hii body ttecome like whipcord His life was greatly des paired of, and yet the physician could uot imagine what had caused the sick ness. Had he remembered, he was atterwards asked, to have eaten any thing that made him sick. •Nothing.' he said, 'except a piece of orange which Miss Smith gave me, aud that was so bitter 1 could not take it.' To the father's miud, at least* there is no question that the same hand had prepared all this j>oisoned bait. As to tbe last attempt for which Miss Smith is now under lock aod key, the first fruits were oranges, figs and can dies These were sent to Mr. Stine on Tuesday, and left on the doorstep, with a note attached, which the fol lowing history Early last w»ek Miss Fannie Winters, a pupil in the public school* was invited by M»se Smith to SEATTLE, WASHINGTON TERRITORY, SATURDAY. JI'NE 29, LS7S. write to her dictation the following •These goods should have been de livered Wednesday. We forgot them.' The note was writen, and Miss Smith took it and said, 'Write it again in a bolder hand." This fact the girl announced at home before anything was known of the attempted murder. The next day a dozen lemons and a dollars worth of sugar were purchased at a grocery store ou Miss Smith's ac count by a little child who was in structed to take them to the school room. These goods were delivered at Mrs. Stine's door with the following note : you at dinner or at tea. Business this A. m.' On Friday a basket containing a four and a half pound roast of veal was purchased at Bowman's butcher shop on the same account, and was found ac Mrs. Stine's, with the following, in a disguised hand : —'Will see you at dinner or at tea. 'Don't write. Busi ness this A. M.' All therse goods have since been identified. Thus it seems that the con coction is one of somejgrowth and the incentive of the would-be murderess is a greater mystery than ever. _ MISCELLANEOUS.
