HALL, Settle. i A Picture of an Aver se 'Frisc Boy. From the Araonvit H«' resides in San Francisco. I first saw him while v a friend tr North Beach, where Ua 'hang* out.' He is now as much a« twelve or thir teen year* of ag*-. My fir*t introduc tion to this manly Hoy was in this wise; I was standing, one Sunday aftc moon, in company with a friend.*.t th men agerie iu the locality referred to, re garding with deep interest an unusually intelligent monkey, whom i was re fr'thing with ten cents worth of pea nuts, when a boyish voice behind me exclaimed, authoritatively : 'Here now ! How's this? Lt a lei low see won.t you? 001-darn you, you ar« always in the way !'—only he u»«d a less mild expletive-—and at the same time I was honored Ly a violent push from l>ehind, and the Boy of 'Frisco for it was he—stepped in. I ventured to remonstrate. O, you be darned V he exclaimed. 'You fellers must think cos a feller's not as big a.j you that he's no 'count and hasn't no rights that yer b >und to respect.' I probably displayed some indica tions of displeasure, for the next mo ment there were two rapid concussions and two bu'lft* went {lying pa«t my temple. H»* had merely empti d two chambers of hi* revolver—a useful at tide he always carried—at me, my li!« bting providentially saved l>y hi* tUISMng ItlM 'What, not killed!' Un exclaimed. 'Well, i'/s not worth while a-wasting any more powder on you, us I'vt; got other shooting to do to day if certain follers comes round.' Thus my life was saved a second time. A boy who wilt deliberately shoot twiee at a man, with a view of killing him, must be a lioy of 'Frisco. Well, I kept my eye on that boy. Says I to myself: 'How precocious Why, there's no end to the Congressmen he may be one of these days !' Alter killing one of the monkeys, and threratcoing even a bear that merely looked at him, he lighted a cigar and went into a neighboring saloon for his drink. There ho called ail hands up to drink with him, after which he said he had i.o money to throw away in that manner, and swore shoot the first m m who didn't pay for the drinks in hi- stead. The first man paid it, and the Hoy, after knocking down of gentle men, l*ft the saloon. i 1 asked the barkeeper it* it was euv tomary to submit to the«e little annoy ances from the Boy. 'O, ha's a datigrroos elmracter,' said ) the barkeeper, turning pale, 'and it is best to get along quietly with him.' 1 walked out to see what new pre cocity would be developed. I arrived . at the door just in time to see iiun stub and 101 l a Chinaman whom he htp ! pened to meet, and could not but help admiring his strict sense of economy with reference to his powder. Perhaps he did not considet the Chinaman worth a bullet, and I remember with pride that he had houored me with two. 110 now went t«> the beach with several companions to where he had a small yacht of his own anchored, and they sailed out upon the I»ay. Thus 1 lost sight of him for an hour or two ; but he returned bye-and-bye, with one companion lesa than he had sailed with, having drowned one during the voyage for disputing his word. His next movement Whs to enter a saloou, c all for drinks and cigars all round, and this time, through s >uie whim, he did not force any one to pay tor them, but aim ply waved his had gracefully to the barkeeper, saying : 'Them's on mo!' \\ Inch was an intimation that they wers to bo charg ed to his account. He now referred to his watch ; and after cursing a few minutes, remarked that it was alfcuit time for him to go to the pnze-tight, as hu hail heavy bets on it and was determined that his champion shouldn't be licked. The prizefight was between two buys of nine years each ; and as the lt«-y ef 'Frisco stated that no man not even a polieceman—should be itl lowed to ho present, I x;is unable to witness the masterly exhibition. 1 saw the lioy of 'Frifco no more that day, but have carefully witched his career since. I learned that he fin ished that days pleasure by getting very drunk towards eveuiug and going home ami murdering hi* mother. This lioy is not without his good traits of character. He will stick by a frieud to the la*t, nud has already kill ed three buys in defending a young i getithmtu of eight years, who is the son of wealthy parents and always has plenty of money, lie also knocked a tnau's eye out tor venturing to sj«e:ik disrespectfully ot hih tl.t r ivmj> whose father kept a cigar store. IK also showed some goodness of heart, on one occrtsston, by taking all tha money from the hut of a blind Iwjigar, to ke%|> for him, lest other boys should it lie has kept it faithfully to this day. Another redeeming trait of his i>. that he £<>es home very 'full' every night. prepared to lit? down peroetuliy in a drunken stupor until morning;, pro vided nobody irrititea him, a-, did bis late unfortunate mother, by uot hav ing a hot whiskey-punch quite ready . for liiid. The poor Boy has no father ; { lie killed him with a shoe k.at'e souie thiee years ago ile ha t a little sifter, hut he took her out boat riding one day, and came back alone. 'Drowned,' Mid he 'by ofciU+t? hut he winked when he said it, and laid a significant emphasis on the woni occult at: so that the coroner was of the opinion that he must have thrown her out of the boat, liut as it could not In* proven that he ! had tir.»t killed her, no aeUon was taken in the matter. In t*et, being liie Liog rapher of the Boy of i" ri»co, 1. ot *b tuen, should do him justice when h • deserves it; and I must say, in all cau ! dor, that it is not positively known j that he ever committed more than ieveu SEATTLE. WASHINGTON TERRITORY, WEDNESDAY. JULY IT, IS7S. »o' r :fr.s. There must be some natural, :.'if»ori. goodness about a boy of his age who 1»lis killed so few people. Of course I have said nothiug of the burglaries and robberies he has been c nrerned in, and the houses he has set! on tire. These are simply the result of the natural weakness of humanity, in herited by all boys of his age. Far be it from me to say that this youth ot twelve yeats is the worst bov in San Francisco, or even as bad a* some others. I have merely presented him as a fair average. I know other boys th it are very wicked, compared ! with him. I do.not even wish to convey the idea that, as the times go, he is at all ' fii>t* >ti 11 not concealing the fact that I humbly hope, with a C'hristain year long that I shall one day see him fast —to the lower end of a rope. A RUSTIC "T*eed ring" has been discovered in Warren county, New J<rsy, and its stealings are set down at the moJcst suui of $130,000. The ootn munifly there is un agricultural one, with but little direct interest in the up» and dowus of commerce, and Belvidere, the country town, is more deeply stirred by the appearance of the Hes sian t'y than it would be by the great er finmoid cash that might happen in Wall street. Here, one might think, would be a most unlikely field for operations, and yet we learn that it lias been the scene of "as shame less a s» t of robereries as was ever per petrated by '{public officers." Tha method of plundering in this case was in great part the same as that of the Tweed ring m New York city, the stealings being, however, on a scale that appears microscopic beside the great municipal robbery of the world. Vouchers for county work donejand sup plies furnished were "rawed" —from *OOO to $ 1,900, from $l6O to $460, and such like—while bills for fabulous quantities of Paris green, Epsom salte, etc., were 'passed' by bogus auditors regardless of expense. A lot of carpets put down at S4OO, for instance, charged as being for the county buildings, nevt r reached there at all, but was taken to the houses of certain otlicials, anl l another carpet, bought for S4O, \\a-i charged to the county at S<J4O. The "boss robber" turns out to be one l->r. Mattison, who was Clerk of the "County Board of Chosen Freeholders,' and who held all bonds and other records. Ho and sou.e others impli cated have left for parts unknown, ami some who remain are iu imminent danger of arrest. MISCELLANEOUS. M>(Kl\rilMl & REEVES REAL ESTATE —AND - Abstract Office.
