The above has reference to old potatoes only, flew are selling at 50 cents to $1 per hundred. They were separated at ouce, each returned to his individual iuge, and a pledge of secresy was mu tually given. As the story leaked out, we can only suppose that the bird* divulged it. IMTHOVEMENTM NEAR LAKEUNIJN All around the western end of Lake Union are improvements in progress. A gentleman named Bowman has re cently built a very neat house there, and Mr. C. P. Stone is preparing the ground for another. Considerable clearing of lots is in progress, and we arc informed that work awaits several men there. Residents of other por tions of the town, who have not been to Lake Uui >n for a year or two, will be surprise J at the evident increase ot population. In fact, there is quite a town there, including not far from fifty bouses and two hundred people. It is a question yet to be decided whether the street cars will run first to Belltown or to Lake Union. EXTENSION or THURSTON COUNTT RAILROAD—Mr. J. P. Judsou, of ttw Olympia narrow gauge railroad com pany, while in Portland last week in formed an Oregonum representative that bis company would send out sur veyors aa soon as the weather permitted, te locate an extension of their route from Tenino to some point on the Ch«- halis river. As soon as this e*ten«i»n is completed, they will pnt on a light draught steamboat and thus have a through connection from Chehslis Point to Olvmpia, a distance of 108 miles. Thiud Class Mattkii.— The regis tration of third class mail matter is increasing, i specially on the Pacific Coast, wh< re it is nearly as great, and at Oakland exceeds, the registration of first-class matter, A request has been made by several Pacific Coast post ollices for special facilities, such as a leather box or pouch for the transmis sion of coin and bullion to the mints, which articles comprise tbe larger part of the registered thirJ class mail.
