DULY INTELLIGENCER. Saturday, August 9, 1879. SCHOOL CENSUS That Seattle is once more rspidlv gaining population is evident in msny ways, and in uo way more so than in the apparent acrraie of fan i»< The latest testimony w« have i support of this aasoMion i« th<- repoitof F Igar Bryan, City School Clerk, to E S In graham, Couutj Sujjerintendent, which tells n» the following of the children within the city limits: Between 4 and 21 years of ago. 117 S. 1579. Males t-'JH Hi Females 17 i 490 01' 071 L'n l«r 4 yearH 187 M. IS7W. Males 157 IS<J Feuiab s .... IHS ISI :m 367 Joining the two table;, we find the whole nuuit>cr of children entitled to school money to have be*n ai follows; M A IKS. FEMAI.KS. TOTAL IR7H OOJ 0,2 12&7 IH7» .670 671 1341 The incre«s<' ov<-r included 0 girls and 75 boys— 84 te»g< tlier. To j those individnaN who imagine that Heattla is lotting population, and that ' she has not so many inhabitant today , as «hu had a year ago, we commend the foregoing, an also the additional state)- i meat that Seattle, by the school census j of 1577, hid only H7l children under 21 years of age, and, in compared with three years ago, the | number i* now 50 per cent, gre-ater, and as compared with two years ago CO per cent, greater Can any other town in the Territory make a better showing ? Estimating the whuld population of a city at three times the number of its schoed children is very moderate, and usually mil h within the range o( truth. Multiplying Seattle's Fill children by the figure named will iudicate a total population of 4023 souls, a number wo believe to be not unreasetnable. DUTIES OF lUDGES AND LAWYERS. We have had a number of instances in Seattle, of lato, when lawyers and judges havo been sharply aud unreason ably critidtsed for doing nothing more uor less than their duty. When that duty comes in conflict with the wishes and interests of any considerable num ber of people, the latter apparently imagiue that the lawyer or judge should favor them, whether they arc in tho right or wrong. A judge is expected on such occasions to violate the sanctity of his oath of office for tho sole purpose of gratifying the |ieoplo. H ■ must uot decide the law impartially, but so as to suit tho present whim of the greater number. It is the same .villi attorneys. When one is engaged by a poor fellow to advise him, or to assist him out of a sorspe. if that advice or assistance is sgaiust the good of the couiinuuity, or is thought to bo so, the commuuity rises at once against the lawyer. He is a traitor aud sooundrel, and should be driven from town. His own friends are silenced, aud in a moment perhaps the most popular man iu town finds him self alone. This is certainly all wrong. It Would be a hard condition of affairs if lawyers refused, at the dictation of the crowd, to we rk for tneir clieuts, and if judges, simply to pander to voters and taxpayers, deliberately construed the law contrary to their own knowledge of it. There would be no reliance, no honor io either, and the tendency would lie toward anarchy and the constant ex ercise of might over right. ■V TKLKUHAPH AMU NIIU BOSTON. Aug. 2—The Assessor's val uation of the city for 1879 is *fll2.'JM,- 600, of which is real estate. Thera is a gain of votes, mainly in the Democratic Wards. NEW YORK, Aug. 2—A large tract of land has been purchased by a company of capitalists at liockaway, which will be laid out as a park, au l upon which a handsome hotel will be •reeled. Among the wen said to be interest*! are Senator Chaffee, of Colorado, and David Moffatt.ot Denver; the latter contributing #1,000.000. Five and a half millions have beeu dt»voted to the purchase aud improvements. A new railroad, ranting almost in a direct line from the city, will be built at a cost of #1,000,000. ▲ request ha* been received from Ni caragua that Ciril Engineer Menocal, U S Jf, be allowed to visit that country and complete under its auspices bit work on certaiu unfinished portions of' • survey of the route for a propositi inter-oceanic canal. Menocal formerly did work under that Govern ment. The request for his aid uov has been granted by Secretary Thompson, to . whom it til referred. Menocal will shortly leave for Nicaragua. A Washington special says Mcnccal is placed ou waiting orders, and will probably uot go to Nicaragua before November, 110 » somewhat out of health and needs rest.
