With the spring, McClcllan moved his
army to tho Peninsula, took tho hoevy
fortifications of Yorktown, fought a
battle et Williamsburg and pushed on
after the retreating enemy, lie wai
soon at the gatos of their capital, but
with courago only i ncrt asod by dofoit
they turnod fiercely upon him, and after
soven most dosporato and bloody hat
ties forced him to retreat to the Jamos.
Then, unable to dislodgo him froui his
position, they turned their attention to
Washington. McClollan's army hastily
ro-oinbarkod and joining Pope at Wash
ington went out to meet the advancing
foe. Then came tho second battle of
llull linn, whore two hundred thous
and soldiers fought for three days.
Again victorious, the Confederates,
| commanded by one of tho ablost sol
diers in the country, dashed into Mary
land, which was enemy's; country to
them. The Army of the Potomac,
again hastily organized by McClellan,
met them, and, after two fleroo battles
South Mountain and Antietam—com
pelled them to flee iuto Virginia again.
Strongly fortified at Fredericlubucg,
Gen. Hurnside was seut with an army
to dislodge them, suffering a terrible
defoat and losing noarly thirty thous
and incn. A few months later, the
same army recruited and reorganized,
and under command of Hooker attack
ud the victorious army at Chancellors
ville, again resulting in a disastrous
defeat. Flushed with victory, the
Confederate army marched two bun
dred miles into Pennsylvania, where
they were again met by tho same old
Army of tho Potomac, under Meade,
end driven leek defoated. Finally
came Grant's campaign, which lasted
more than a year, and embraced twenty
er thirty battles. Meanwhile lighting
was going on in the West, South, and
Southwost. with alternate victories and
defeats. In tho whole four years the
Federal Government never thought of
capitulating, while the plucky South
ouly succumbed wheu, figuratively
sitcaking, its last breath was gone. In
this war of four years, between four
