enough to kick out this prop upon which

THE
meeting held last Monday night at
Cooper Institute, New York, to advance the
dress reform tn .veuicui, was mismanaged,
disorderly and futile. It is said that the
"pledge offered was not sufficiently stringent,
and in fact might prove altogether inopera
tive, on account of the insertion of the
word "convenient," and from the fact that
many ladies may go gorg.-ousiy dressed in
the silks of tilt* present well .stocked
wardrobes. Miss Susan II Anthony made
a stirring speech. Among other things she
said
If I understand the spirit of the women
here to-day it is that they want a pledge so
strong ami thorough, that every one who
gives her name to il, will be compelled to
make a sacrifice. Applause, i If thu ave
nue has already silks, and matins, and bro
cades to hi'-t for five, ten, or fifteen years,
if the war should continue so long, and if
the avenue wear brocades and satins, the
poor working woman who earns thi'ee or
live dollars a week, must make an attempt
to appear as well as the Fifth Avenue lady.
Here is the point of difference in the assem
bly. We demand a pledge made by the
women of the Empire City, tliat will place
Fifth Avenue on a level with other streets
of the city.
)ur mothers did not pledge themselves
to dispense with the use of tea provided it
was made convenient. Ladies—"That is
good.") They did not say if our luuband
chances to be worth $500,000 or a million,
he may use ore pound or ten pounds.-—
That was not the point. It was a crime to
Iind it closeted in the hou.e at all. We
want the women of the North to pledge
themselves to something definite, that
those may be known who belong to the
convenient and who have taken the •coven
ant.
