A REfTErr letter 1'rot.i Italy, speaking of
I iic Last Supper of Leonardo de Vinci,
Ktat-H that the prophecy that the present
(feneration would he the la.st to see even the
traces of this once glorious picture, is un
fortunately sure of fultilluient. A more
complete wreck cannot well he eonciivcd—
so complete thst it is now almost impos
sible to distinguish even the outline of the
principal lijrures. This picture may he
riled as one of the in»ist remarkable in
stances ol the pei'inhahle nature of oil col
or*. It was finished about I••*!». In 1540
one-half is said to have disappeared, and ti n
years la!-t nothing but the out line remained.
How artist* undertook to restore it, anil
what rt.in they wrought, is well known.—
Very instructive, though not a little vexa
tious is the fact that, while this oil picture
has disappeared, the largo fresco of the
i'rurilixion, l«y Monfortv.no, executed in
1-tSMi, is in good condition and we have
many examples of admirably preserved
frescos, which dale many centuries hack.
