!*Jic we advise them to call at Cone's and
see a machine worth looking at—worth
uuying—and worth using. It is positively
the best machine for all kinds of work, ever
made or uscl. It is none other than the

POLICE UOI HT.—John (Jill was arrested
for disturbing the public quiet, and brought
before 'Squire Wheeler, for which oil'cnce
he was lined five dollars and costs.
John Eariiart was arrested for drunken
ness and disturbing the pence of his neigh
borhood, and was fined fifteen dollars and
•costs.
MAKE ENTWES.—In order to avoid the
rush and crtisR at the Secretary's otficc on
the opening Hy of the Sc\tt County Fnir,
we advise those who have determined upon
articles to enter for exhibition, to call on
Mr. llaight, the Secretary of the Society, at
his store, on Perry street, and have their
entries made at once. This will save a
good ileal of trouble, all around. See ad
vertisement.
SCHOOLS.—The Fall and Winter tartn of
our city schools commenced this Diornfhg.
The attendance will undoubtedly be heavy,
as thcre is no lack of confidence in the abil
ity of those who have them in charge. Pa
rents who have scholars to send, should see
that they commence with the beginning of
the term, and are punctual until its close.—
Nowhere in the whole country do the youth
enjoy better facilities for obtaining a sub
stantial education, and to let it pass unim
proved would be gross neglect on the part of
4»"y ?ne.
ESCAPE.—We understand that
our 'espectfcd fellow-citiaen Austin Corbin
Esq., met with a very narrow escape recent
ly, in this, that he sent a substitute in
to the field to do his fighting for him, and
the substitute, a worthy young tnan, by the
name of John 'cManus, J., was killed in
a recent enga-eiw,nt. Mr. C. deeply re
grets the fate tliat it^oved bis nun trooi

ORIS*OI.D COLLBA.—The Fah TERM of
tins Institution will begin Monday, -Sept,
8th. Pupils are requested to be presenv^t
tae opening exercises at 0 o'clock in the1
forenoon of the day mentioned. Addition^

Mr. .Surby i* ari excellent business man,
and it is to be hoped that, in hi.s hands, the
the store will maintain that high rtputtUiuii
which Mr. Starr has earned for it.
IIOMI'SICK.—Two substantial young men,*
named John S. Webb and James S. Wil
sou, having served their country three
years in the army, came home and thoug'.t
they would try tbetrold trade—bl ieksmith
ing, a while, so they opened a shop in this
city. But in a short time they became tired
of that sort of exercise and made up their
minds to throw aside the tools and go back
to the army. Accordingly they have en
listed this day, and will soon havo another
opportunity to get a lick at the Confedc
