REXEMITBU THE
POOB.—Our
citizens, ever
anxious in good works, should not forget
that the brightest trait in the Christian
character, is plain, unostentatious charity.
Let it not be forgotten then, that there arc
numerous poor families among us who ought
to be provided for on Thanksgiving Day.—
Let some action be taken directly to make
happy faces and joyous hearts on that day.
GET RICH.—Be
industrious and
saving. You can always save ten percent,
in price by buying your clothing at Sam
Perry's, and ten per cent, more in durabili
ty, and twenty per cent, on one suit is about
as much as any reasonable man cxpects to
save. Go to the store opposite the Post
Office—it is the best.
BRILLIANT TABLEAUX.—There
young folks will be
delighted to hear that J..
C.
DAVENPORT, IOWA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1864.
THAXKSGIVIXO DIVNKB.—In
order that
their numerous friends may enjoy a rousing
thanksgiving dinner on Thursday next, and
have everything all nice and inviting. Parks
k Hosmer, the popular Grocers on the Sooth
Fast corner of Brady and Fourth Streets,
have laid in a stock of the nicest flour, fruits,
spices, butter, chcese, cider, pickles, nuts,
raisins,—in short everything you want, ex
cept the turkey itself, and they will get that
if you de-sire them to. Thej have got the
best goods, and wil1 sell lower than any oth
er concern in tho city—sand your goods
home and warrant everything all right.
Don't forget Parks k Hosmer when you go
for Thanksgiving groceries.
NOBLE IMPROVEMENT*—Though
our city ia
blessed bej'ond most other Western towns
in the extent and beauty of shade trees
which skirt and embelliah the streets in
every direction, it affords us genuine (grati
fication to observe that our citizens have
not yet wearied in improving and ornament
.ing their property in this way. We take
pleasure in noticing the fact that the prop*
erty holders on the east side of Brady street,
between Cth and Dth street, arc setting out
a continuous line of splendid, vigorous
young trees along the sidewalk. The work
is being done by our young friend, John
Temple, which is a sufficient guaranty for
the success of the work. This vrsrk on the
part of the property holders on that street
will be a lasting monument to thsir memory
—will afford them and the public pleasure
and comfort, and not only the present, but
future generations will be thankful that
their predecessors were people of such good
taste.
By the way, this is an excellent time fot
our citizens to plant trees in front of tin if
property. The cost will be but a mere trifla
in comparison to the benefits to be derived.
These benefits consist n^t alone in the com
fort they bring through tho senses, but
every tive so planted adds a real cash value
to the property which it embellishes—an
additional price which any purchaser is ever
willing and anxious to pay. We*know of
no small investment that will yield such a
round interest as that made in planting vig
orous yeung trees along the streets. Let
every propel ty holler in tho city, who has
not already done so, try it.
