by Prosecuting Attorney Files and J. W.

large, and may occupy the Court all next
week.
MORE TRBES.—We notice that Dr. Bar

trees in front of his property on the west
side of Main street, between 5th and 6th
streets. Let other citizens who have not
done so follow suit. It pays.
FIREMEN'S HOP.—The members of the Fire
King Engine, No. 1, have decided to give
another of their very pleasant hops at
Lahnnann's Hall, on the 7th of December
next, lihe proceeds are to be devoted to
the Steam Fire Engine Fund. Let our cit

TUSSB talented artists whose engagement
has been the greatest success in the annals
of Davenport Theatricals, take their farewell
benefit, and make their last appearance but
one, to-night, in Sir E. Bulwer Lytton's
popular play of the "Lady of Lyons," a play
too-well known for any description or
analysis to be necessary. It is consid
ered wherever the English tongue is spoken
to have some of the finest language in it,
ever written. Miss Emma Webb takes the
character of Pauline, and Miss Ada appears
in an entirely new note—that of Madame
Dishappelles. Mr. Wildman plays Claude
Mclnotte. As it is the occasion of the
Webb Sisters' farewell benefit—as the piece
it a beautiful and high-toned one, and as it
is its first and only representation there is
sure to be a crowded house, and we advise
all who desire a front seat and love comfort,
to secure their seats before hand. The per
formance concludes with "Our Gal."
To-morrow evening will be produced for
the first time the drama of "Jack Shepp

with Pocahontas.
We are informed by the
that extensive preperations are being
to produce the thrilling, sensational and
mystic drama of the lGorsican Benthos"

Iinsaasiiss Ravaava IMMMIS.-The de
cision contained ia tho following letter, ia
givsa in response to a latter of inquiry ad
to Tissaay Department by Messrs.
A WhHeomb, lawyers of this dty,
is wed worth a carsAd perusal.
TBBASOBT Dapaaraaa*,
Ornca or ISTBBIIAL RBVBXUB, V
WASBIXOTOX, NOV. 9th, 1864.
GentlemeaYours of November 4th,
in relation to your license as lawyers, is re
ceived I reply, that by section 79, lawyers
are subject to pay $10.00 for each license.
By section 74, every person exercising or
carrying on trade business or profession,
for which license is required, must produce
his license on demand of any officer of Inter
nal Revenue, and unless he shall dffso, may
be taken aad deemed to have no license.
The penalty for not having lioontw is im
posed by section 73.
In the case of lawvers, one of a firm of
which, is often at Court, while the other
remains at the office, it seems peculiarly
noceasary that each have a license by him,
in order to escape the penalties of Section
73, resulting from any demand of a Reve
nue officer under Section 74.
In as much as you have butone license be
tween you, you will be re-assessed un 'er
Section 80, necessarily, for the amount due
under the new law.
The tax is not f2V.OO upon a partittrtkip
of attorneys, but $10.00 upon each and ev
cry lawyer whether in partnership or not.
This office permits the original firm-li
cense to be transferred to Otic of a firm,
while the other procures another for h'in
self: and when this privilege is not taken
advantage of, assessors are instructed to
make new assessments on both members or
sll the members of a firm.
Very respectfully,
A. JoaasH^
Actg. Commissioner*
BEKKETT A WBITCOMB,
Davenport, Iowa.
By this it will bo seen that the law re
quires eveiy attorney to hare his license
upon his person and producable at a mo
ment's notice! It is uot competent for
him to say that his license is at his at his
oflfce, or at his house it must be absolute
ly in his pocket—presentable at once! This
seems to bo putting an extremely fine point
upon the law—not to call it oppressively ex
acting.
Another point is, that in case of partner
ship of two or more lawyers forming one
firm, doing business in the some office—
each member of the firm must have a sepa
rate license. The same ruling must, of
course, apply to physicians, brokers, agents
etc and ,if to them, to merchants also.
Each member of a wholesale merchandising
house should just as much have AM license
in his pocket to be presented on demand of
any Reveuue officer, as each member of a
law firm. We think the best lawyer in the
land will hardly find any clause in the Rev
enue law that will bear out the decision
above made.
TIIE CBBISTIAN HOVE.—This institution,
devoted purely to charitable purposes, is,
we are glad to know, in a promising condi
tion. The building is being furnished as
fast as possible, and will now accommodate
several inmates. A matron has been en
gaged, and already several people are re
ceiving the benefits of its charities. The
funds raised through the entertainment at
LeClaire Hall to-night, will be applied to
furthering the interests of the Home.—
Every dollar given is a dollar to alleviate
the sufferings and make comfortable the
needy.
TABLBAUX.—Don't forget that LeClaire
Hall accommodates less than a thousand
people, oonsequently ^those who expect to
enjoy the treat to be given there this eve
ning, should go esrly. Many will regret
that a more commodious hall had not been
secured by the managing committee.
The members of the Davenport Circle of
the Fenian Brotherhood are requested to at
tend the meeting on Monday evening, at 7i
o'clock, as business of importance will be
transacted.
