WoHKIKl OCT AH OLD ROAD TAX. —Mr. M Pitchsr, known to all of our Jersey llidge friends, refused, last year, to work out bie road tax or to hire it done, and was sccerd inrly returned marked "unpaid." Noa there happened to be a vcr,' bad place in tbe road on tbe Jerssy Ridge road at Duck Creek near tbe Orphans' Home. It was a most pokerish looking placs especially when the water is high in that meandering stream. For the sake of tbe public safety and that the tax might be paid, ho was rs peatedly solicited to work at that place.— Consistent to the last he refuted. He thought that anj one who could not keep the road there, even in high water, ought to get wet and he wouldn't help them out either. The road is atiil unsafe and now the water pours in torrente over road and bridge ao that passengers ate obliged to swim their hora.'i. Mr. Pitcher came in 10-dsy. Like a va'mi knight on the res cuo charge, he entered the current, muddy with the hillside washing. His noble steed struggled with the jrrent lost his footing horse and rider wire swamped in ths muddj turbulent water—they meandered down a short distance and emerged spout ing, blowinjr, well satisfied tbat they bad worked out the "oM road tax New RAILROAD TO Cnicauo.— A new rail road project ia developing itself at Peoria, aa we learn from the Jranteript. It is no less than the extension the Chicsgo, Burlington and yuincy branch road from Burlington and tialssburg to Psoria on to Chicago, v.s ,Ten Mile Creek to Metamora, tliencc to Wcnone, Ot'awa and Aurora.— The project la not only feasible but is well received. There is a charter, received from the Isst Legislature, for a road frem Peoria to Wenona. From Wenona to Ottawa a road is already in progress, and a portion, seventeen miles, we believe, in operation.— From Ottawa to Aurera Is the Fox River Valley mad, in aid of which tbe city of Ottawa has subscribed $150,000, snd other localities pinaller amounts. The distance between Peoria and Chicago by this route would be 150 mile-, making it the shortest routo between two cities. The chsrters of all theae roa.ls—tho Peoria end Wenona ths Wenona and Ottawa and the Fox River Valley—will be turned nver to the Chicago Burlington and Qnincy tbe moment perpet ual latssof a fair character may be granted by that company. In view of the cheering indication of the eventual success of the Peoria and Rock Island Railroad, tLe value of this new line will rsaiily be appreoiated by our citizene. Trxmokt Watchbs.—Tha old and relia ble Tremont Watch Company, of Boston, desire to be plainly understood that they chsllen^e any and all competition in the production of fine, reliable time keepers. Tb ir watches are machine made, snd every part aud jar so! is as uniform and perfect as human ingtnuity can devise. The ma terial is always of the lines! and choicest )uality, and every watch utfered is perfect ly honest, accurate and rslishle, and can not fail to satisfy ths purchaser. Years of labor and large amounts of money have been eipended in perfecting these watches, snd to-day the rank first snd foremost in the world. The reputstion thus gained by the Tremont Company has cost uiany thou sands, and will be supported at sll h*z srds. Dealers should urder their stock of watches from this corporation. '.'ity of Dsvensort. Scott Co. State. 1861, 1W, 15 19 1S«.\ tt U IM7, it s IS The above ififftW ftiat the cost of tuition to each pupil per wesk in tbeeity, is only about two thirds aa much aa it is through the County, snd ju-t one hall ss much ss it is throughout ths State. And it seems thst if sny have just cause to oniplain of expensive instruction, they are not those who reside in tbe city. The Kvening Hchool, established by authority of the Hoard, was opened in the Utons Building, District No. 'j, on tha nrst of October, with ons teacher. During the first week ths number in attendance was so greet that a second teacher was employed, and another room opened anS soon ifter the vsry full condition ot ths schools compelled the en.plovmsnt of a third teerber. I pwards of 1M pupifs have attended the school, and 1 believe they bave made very rapid progress In their studies. The msturs sge of the pupils has favored this. Hons are admitted under li years of sge. But the earnestness end fsithful ness of thoee sttendtnr has been the true source of their success. Several rare ex amplee of self denial, for the sske of attending, have come te my knowledge. Une case of a young man, who lived a mile and a half or two inlea away, who left homo before day, taking bis dinner with htm -worked all day at hard labor —came to school and studied till 8 o'c'ock' and tooa his supper after reaching borne at near 10 o'clock at night. A xeel like this is sure to lead to succees' Nearly all the pupils are occupied in labor dur tng the day, and but for ths opportunities of tbe evening school thev wnuld remain unedueated. The branches taught are reading, spelling, writing, arithmetic land to one class grammar. Thsre baa boss an urgent call for an evening school in District No. ti, but as tbe dsy sehoe was not crowded, none was eatabliahed. So far aa I bave heard tbe action of the Board in anthorixiog the evsaing school is cordial I approved. At the commencement of the present year, new arrunirement waa adopted, by which the po eilion of Assistant, Principal, was abolished, and tbe entire control of the school given to ths Principal of the building. Tbe results of this change hare been very fatisfactory. Tbe Pria cipal now examines and assigns to bis proper grade each new pupil that applies for edMissioa to the school He thus becomes better acquaint with all the pupils, and understands mere clearly what is an i should bs required cf each class. Ue stteoda to the examination and motion of each pupil or class, investigates all __ rious cases «f disobsdience, and visits aad eon suits with the parents as occasion sesms to de tnanJ. Ue also gives close attentionto the way in which the Janitor performs hie wock ef cleaning, warming and ventillating. Uv tbe action of the Hosrd at tbe same time, tbe Princ'pal ib relieved of the enecial care of the grammar room, snd assigned a recitation room, where he can hear his elasses and the teacher, formerly known ss asaistant in the grammar-room, now hae tbe entire control and responsibility of tbat room as other teachers have of their rooms. Never before hss there beee a time when the teachers ef the city have be*n more earnest, aad as I believe, more sneceeefal in their tabors th during the past five montba. The evidence of this, aside from a knowledge of each teeeher's spirit end see), is the repM pro gress of ths papils ia their studies, their gener al satisfaction with their schools and the exceed ing rareneae ef complain te from either papils pa rente.
