Davi, of the State Norma! at Kmpoii.i, passed through the city yester day on his way home from the Indian. Ter ritory, where, in conjunction with several other gentlemen, sevcial of them of this "City, he has leased a whole township, or 2-1,000 acies of land fiom the Indians for grazing purposes. The tract is located on the Pawnee reservation, only a short dis tance from the agency. The interested parties iu this city are Mr. Gcllispie, and Maloney, Packard . Co. It is their pur pose to fence this large body of laud and stock it with cattle. Mr. Davis contem plates leaving the Normal and giving his attention to stock raising. BAD ACCIDENT. Mr. William M. Thomas, the aged rather of Al. and Frank Thomas, came near meet ing with a fatal accident yetcrday after noon at about two o'clock. He and his son Frank w ere seated in an open buggy, and had started for the races at Carey 's park. In attempting to turn from Main to First street, one of the buggy wheels caught in the track or the street railway, causing the vehicle to nearly capsic, throwing Mr. Thomas, who Is a gentleman or nearly seventy year, out upon the hard ground. Unfortunately he struck the ground upon his s-houlders aud the back or the head, in juring the spine to such an extent as to cause temporary paralysis. Ho was picked up iu an almost insensible condition, ami removed to his home on the corner of Elm and Lawrence. Dr. Owen, who happened jo be near by, hastened to his aid, and af forded him such tieatment as his injuries warranted. We are pleased to stat thitat this writing Mr. Thomas is very much bet ter, and his complete recovery is liut-a mat ter or time. DISTRICT COURT. AT THE RACES. 1 The races at Care 's Park v eterda after- j uooii were ery largely attended, by both those who were financially interested in the result and all loers of fast nag?. The race was a half-mile dash for $100 a side. ' There were three horses to enter Cyclone, Brown Prince and the Hoover horse. The judges were Tom Jewell, Mr.McSlullcn and a gentleman whose name we failed to learn. Arter considerable jockeying, the animals (were started, Brown Ptincc in the lead, the Hoover horse getting a bad start, and falling slightly behind Cyclone. Betting was lively, and a large amount of money was wagered a? to which hor-e would win. C clone kept the second place until about half the distance was made, when this fleet animal got down to business, and the way it covered the ground was a terror to those who had backed Brown Prince. The race aud stakes were easily won by Cv clone, Brown Prince second and the Hoover horse bringing up the rear. There was some lit tle " kickiir"'" done by those who lost their money, but mi tho whole it was one of the best running races had in Wichita for some time. One of the mo-t interesting features of the races was the exhibition pacing done by L. C, Wood's horse, which is an excel lent animal, aud a graceful and speedv mover. A very tine two story frame building has ust been completed on I'mporia avenue, two blocks north of the Tremout, by Mr. William West. TRIED TO KILL HIS WIFE. Springfield, Mo., June 2. This communi ty was thrown into an intense state of cx cxcitcmcut jesteiday, by the report of an attempt on the pait of J. F. Bartlett, living near here, to kill his wife. It seems the couple engaged in a fjnarrel, and Bartlett assaulted his wife with a butcher knife.
