* PARSONS FOR COX^ ON LEAGUE ISSUE I Favors 1*. S. 'Going In' and Cannot Support Harding, 'Straddler.' ACTION WAS EXPECTED Former Committeeman Had Been Inactive in G. 0. P. for Long Time. Herbert Parsons, for many years ac- j five in the Republican organization bet recently more Interested In the League ; of Nations, announced yesterday his lr- , tentlon of voting for Gov. Cox "as the ] certain way to have the United States Join the league. Resigning rrom the Republican county committee, to which he was no longer . legally eligible, Mr. Parsons wrote to , S&ntuel S. Koenlg, chairman, that be- , fore the war he was for "a" league and i since had been for "the" league. Cox w?? for going in. Harding was for j staying out. Therefore he must vote for j Cos. Ho expressed regret at severing ! old associations. Republican leaders did not show sur- j prise at the action of the former chnir- i man of tho county committee, former j Representative in Congress and forme i member of the National Committee from 1 this State. He has been an active mem- j ber of the League to Enforce Peace and i an ardent advocate of Joining with tho j other nations in the league plan. For j several weeks they had expected some I declaration. So far as could be learned last night j the example of Mr. Parsons will not be i followed by other Republicans who have j had leanings toward a league of na- | tlons. Politically, It was said, tho stand j taken by Mr. Parsons would have-mo effect, as his Inactivity in the organiza- | tlon for some years had resulted in the j elimination of his influence. The addition of Mr. Parsons to the i Cox supporters had the officials at I Oemocratlc national headquarters by | the ears for a time. "This does credit to his patriotism and , convictions," said Chairman George j While. "We welcome hint, fighting I with us for a cause beyond partisanship. ; There will he many more." In his letter to Mr. Koenig Mr. Par- I sons expressed the opinion that "many ( distinguished Republicans, who desire > to see the United States enter the i league," were being ydeceived" in their j support of Harding. ^ "Harding will not i accomplish anything," ho declared. "At; . his talk is mush." Mr. Parsons said the j Republican candidate was "negative and sentimental" and never would know ; What ought to be done by way of an in- j ternational programme. Asserting that the league with the i Lodge reservations was practically what I would bo worked out if Cox were! elected, Mr. Parsons said that would v w1111, iremcai iu euusiying jYmerican | asplrutlons." Harding might do nothing at all, so long as it served to preserve I harmony in the Republican party and 1 make possible continued Republican control of the. Senate. "The cause, the greatest of our day," the letter said, "calis for the aggressive, positive leadership of Cox, not the selfconfessed ignorance of Harding. No straddler can lead a cause." Mr. Tarsons eald an international court would not be sufficient, that the ssue was not between the league as Wilson brought it back and the league with reservations, hut "between going into the league with reservations and not going 'n at all." John K. Parsons, father of Herbert i Parsons, was a Democrat, but his son, i coming from Vale in 1890. decided to be- ! come a Republican. He became leader j of the old Twenty-fifth Assembly Dls- | trtct. Kor five years he was chairman of the County Committee, resigning in j 1910. He served three terms in Congress. : MRS. JOHN S. CROSBY IS WORKING FOR HARDING i Other Democratic Women Join Bolt From Cox. Mis. John Sherwin Crosby, formerly organization head of the Democratic women in this State, accepted yesterday the presidency of the Harding and Wadsworth League of Democratic Voters. Out from the Women's Democratic League, organized In 1914, with Mrs. Crosby have gone many of its most active workers. They ore not pleased with the Democratic candidates. Tlicv I do not like the wet platform In this State and they are not satisfied with the way In which the women have been treated. "1 am, as always, a Democrat," said Mrs. Crosby last night, "hut 1 intend to work for and support Senator Harding, Senator Wads worth and their associates on the Republican ticket, if only as a protest against conditions on the Cox able, which are Intolerable to women voters of Independence. Intelligence an i f may say, self respect. So do the friends with whom I have been in political activities so long?since the organization in Washington of the National Democratic League, of which I was the first president.
