Trea?uror, k SEE NO REASON FOR HIGH COTTON PRICES Wholesale Dry Goods Men Report Cat in Costs From 30 to 50 Per Cent. ST. LOUIS BEHIND N. T. Redactions Announced There Follow Similar Action nere Weeks Agro. According to wholesale dealers In dry goods there Is no apparent reason why the retail purchaser of cotton goods? sheetings, shirtings, denims, tickings and so on?should not be paying anywhere from 25 to 50 per cent. less per yard than she or he did In May. From St. Louis yesterday came a despatch that several wholesale dealers In dry (roods there had announced cuts In prices. Some of these reductions. It was said, amounted to 50 per cent. Inquiry through the wholesale dry goods districts In New York revealed the fact that the Bams thing has happened here, but that the cutting of wholesale prices has been a gradual process. It was found, too, that some of the retailers have marked down cotton goods, keeping step with the Jobbers and wholesalers, but that the cut has not been so uniform or ?o general In the retail trade. The more Important Jobbers and wholesalers here declare that St. Louis has done nothing that tho rest of the country has not done, and' In tho case of New York not so quickly. The wholesale dry goods trade here, they explained, was a day to day proposition, prices moving every twenty-four hours If necessary to keep pace with the llgures established by the economic barometer of supply and demand. For Advertising Kflfeet. In St. Louis (and the same thing has happened in Dallas, Tex.) the Jobbers and retailers composing a market not so sensitive to the dally price barometer, were able to maintain so-called peak prices until a prearranged date, when, with much accompanying advertising, a sharp cut was Wiade in wholesale prices. The Idea was, local Jobbers say. to attract buyers to St. Louis and Dallas. The Idea worked until! it was seen that the general cut In St. ! Louis and Dallas was no greater or any | more Inclusive than that which had been j going on gradually In the Fast. At Claflin's Inc., Carson, Pirie, Scott j & Co.. Jame.s II. Dunham & Co., Burnhan, Munger, Boot Dry floods Company and Converse & Co. verification of these general facta was obtained. One of the officers of James H. Dunham & Co. said that the cut In the wholesa'e market here has been n grndual one, including all bleached goods and domestic cotton goods, but not extending much beyond that sort of merchandise. He and others declared that the same obtained In St. Louis and Chicago, Dallas and other trade centres. "The explanation la simple," he said. "Stripped of all camouflage, the answer is that people would not buy at peak prices?the high prices of last May. We dealers In dry goods found that cither we would have to cut prices to meet the pocketbooks of the consumer or close : our doors on overstocked shelves. So we cut and kept on cutting. Some retailers have followed suit: some haven't. The cut in bleached goods amounts to about 50 per cent. St. Ixiuls has managed to hold up the Inflated market until It seemed- a wise time to cut all at once and make much noise nbout It. It's g >od advertising for St. Louis." From SO to r>0 Per Cent. Cnta. At the offices of Burnham, Monger & Root It was sa id : "Bleached goods have dropped .in to 50 per cent, within the last few weeks. Fruit of the Loom muslins, for Instance have been cut from 40 to 20 cents a yard. \ and pcrcates have g >nc down 20 and 25 per cent. It had to come. It means a | loss to us, but the entire loss is spread out In the progress of tho goods from the producer of the raw materials down I tr> thft If hag h*?#.n Lnnwn Kv I the trade perioralIv that a cut from the top peak prices had to come, and it was decided that now, Just before election, was ?s pood a tlm? as any for the cut to take plaoe. "You may have noticed that there has been a general trend in the textile trades to pet back to something like normal conditions. Labor will havo to realize that it must help. Business is not In danger. Al! we need Is a little steady thinking and cooperation all around and normal conditions will be reestablished. "These cuts in prices had to be made, j People would not buy at former prices. We must sell or go out of business. Therefore we are cutting prices." One of the officials of Converse & Co. said: 'Trices had to drop. There were sev- ! eral contributory causes to the cut In cotton goods prices. The wholesalers have cut almost to a firm. Not all the retailers have. The biggest break In cotton goods prices came when cotton dropped from 40 cents to 17cents. The Government forced this condition to a i great extent, but certain Inexorable e< < - > nomie laws compelled to form the true 1 foundation for the present situation. Be- > cause the cotton planter has decided to store his cotton and place none upon the market until he can get 3t) cents a pound j for It will not seriously nffoct the rotten goods market, for there is plenty of raw j material to be had. "The untlmate consumer, scared by the j demanded prices In retail stores, is not j honsumlng Of eourso he must use some | cotton goods, but a minimum is being used and will he used until retail prices are more normal.
