Call money eased off from 7 to 6 per

Ktw K?cords.
At the same timo It was establishing
new low records for stocks the market
was establishing some new high records,
particularly In respect to the number of
stocks in which trades were made. The
total amounted to 405 separate Issues
In contrast to a previous high record of
400. The sales of 1,700.951 shares did
not break any previous records, as there
have been several two million share days
this year, but the total of bond sales.
$34,442,000, had not been approached
this year.
Cash Baying.
There was a noteworthy increase in
cash buying of securities, one house reporting
transactions aggregating $1,000.000
par value. Selling to establish tax
losses, coupled with sales by those who
could carry stocks no longer, apparently
overwhelmed the buying orders. The
bond market was somewhat heavy, but
at that It presented a sharp contrast to
the price movement in stocks.
Support tn the Market.
When stocks were their weakest, about
the middle of the afternoon, there were
evidences of sudden and effective support
in a few leaders. Steel common particularly.
That support, It was said,
came from banking interests closely allied
with the Steel Corporation and had
the effect of checking the decline, not
only In Steel shares but also in the rest
of the list. The two point break In
Steel to a low of 76-4 on a relatively
few thousand shares had frightened traders
badly and it was not until the tape
showed unmistakable evidences of support
in that stock that tney regained
confidence.

ft Is estimated br railroad officials
thut the Increases In railroad fares In
N'ew York State, which went Into effect
yesterday on the New York Central and
the Delaware and Hudson, will amount
approximately to $12,000,000 for the
year. The New York Central's increased
revenue Is by far the largest
for any railroad In the State. Officials
of the company said yesterday that the
additional revenue would amount to approximately
$18,000 a day.
Standard Oil of New Jersey.
For the first time since It was listed
on the New York Stock Exchange.
Standard OH of New Jersey common
stock sold below $600 a share. Although
It had hovered c'ose to that figure for
several days. It v.aa not until yesterday
that the selling finally broke It under
the 600 mark. The final figure of 578.
which was also the low for the day. represented
a net decline on the day of 2S
points.
International Paper.
Many stocks at the lows of yesterday
were selling below their asset value,
but It remained for International Paper
to sell at the low of 8S%. or within a
single point of Its estimated earnings
a share for the current calendar year.
The company's earnings In October were
unusually large.
Complete flaying Employee Stock.
It was learned yesterday that with
the purchase of a block of Its own common
stock at 77% the United gtntes
Steel Corporation has completed the accumulation
ot the stock which will be
offered to its employees during January
In continuance of the partial payment
plan through which workers for the corporation
aro permitted to subscribe annually
for its stock. The order Is said
to have been put In at 94, and brokers

Vanadium Corporation.
The big break in Replogle Steel resulted
In a crack of a somewhat similar
nature, although perhapH not quite as
violent. In Vanadium Corporation of
America. About the same time that
Replogle touched its low of 4 7 Vi Vanadium
sold down to 28 V4 for a net loss
of more than 7 points. In the subsequent
rally Vanadium recoveed a pohit
of Its decline, closing at 29^4. off 6'4
points.
It a mora Denied.
The break In Vanadium and Replogle
Steel was accompanied by reports that
Allan A. Ryan had broken away from
Ills agreement with the banks and that
H.rA h?Tn* marketed As a
matter of fact the Ryan collateral Included
neither Replogle nor Vanadium
and there was no truth whatever In the
reports of any change In the relation
between the banks and Mr. Ryan. It
was also reported widely that bankers
were going to Issue Borne sort of a reassuring
statement. In Important banking
circles no need was seen of such a
statement. On the contrary, the market
movement was described as
"healthy" rather than otherwise.

Canada's Trade Balance.
In connection with the downward
movement of Canadian exchange New
York funds at Montreal rising to a new
high record of 19 per cent., It Is pointed
J out that Canada's unfavorable balance
! of trade amounts to between $300,000.000
and $400,000,000. Because Canada
i cannot ship gold and borrowing Is not
expedient, the only solutions In sight appear
to, bo a greater production and
larger sales or a curtailment of hsr
heavy purchases on this side of the
border.
