Last Week's Total Is Slightly j
Down?Current Week to
See Increase.
The market for investment securi:ies|
continues to romp nlonj undiatmbed lv
soldier bonus bug:iboot", a steady flood
of new bond issue? or the fa?-t th:;t ihc ;
recovery in prices since last spring has ,
been of remarkable proportions for to
brief a time. The last week saw some j
diminution in the creation of new Issues, |
but the total, nevertheless, was sizeable, I
amounting to about $70,000,000 and the
current week promises to far outstrip
that figure. There are in sight or under
negotiation by Wall Street bankers new
loans aggregating about $90,000,000,
largely to foreign Governments or for
eign railroads.
The turnover in listed beams on the
Stock Exchange was in sustained vol- i
time throughout the week, the nr,"J
trend being upward, but the rapK.-ty ? "
the advance naturally Is being rei i'e-i
by removal of investment is-u"* n
the inordinately depressed figures of a
few mortths ago. In fact, thfc bis gtnr.j
in recent bond trading have been eon
fined primarily to foreign Government
securities and to the out and out speeu
latlve issues of domestic corporations. ,
There is not much room for further quick
advances in gilt edge investments, which j
are hard to buy on a yield basis more
favorable than 5 to 6 per cent. Hut with :
the prevailing money market on a t to
4 per cent, basis there is bound to be i
a further gradual appreciation in first
class issues and speculative bu> ing al
tvavs can be counted on under the cir
cumstances of plethoric money supplies ,
to elevate the second and third rate j
bonds. ... '
That foreign bend issues pre steadilj
finding favor with American investors
was indicated by th* preference shown
for many su-'li i-ws in la*"1 week s j
trading, the ; for them being ,
because, genera; y speak eg. thej aio |
selling behind tbe lyst of the bond mai
ket and can be purchased on a higher
income basis. Swiss 8s. which were
quoted at a new high of 11!>. show wh i.
a long term, high coupon bond can do
In the present market when an obliga
tion is deemed to be of sterling quality-.
Because tbe best American rallsoad
nnd public utility bonds have returned
to a relatively low yield basis, and there
is a very large class of investors which
will not buy foreign securities, invest
ment experts are looking for a better
and more active market for preferred
stock?. It is the opinion that the time
is rapidly drawing near when well es
tablished corporations will be able to
raise funds through the sale of 7 per
cent preferred stock without difficulty
A security of that sort will be taken
bv many investors in preference to sec
ond grade bonds or foreign securities,
dealers find, assuming, of course, that
the issuing company has a good earn
ing record. Certain critics of the bond
market think that there is a tendency
to overdo financing through bonds and
assert that the quality of certain new
Issues has been deteriorating of late
merely because bonds are in fashion
and easy to sell.
New State and municipal financing
dropped off in the last week, but deal
ers have nothing to complain of so far
as demand for their wares is concerned.
The market holds firm and is charac
terized by much activity, a condition
which seems destined to endure as long
as th.? swpplv of United States Govern
ruent notes and bonds is diminished b>
Kradual retirement, thus forcing eaptta
to seek new employment in tax exeonpt
municipals. , ,
Financing accomplished last week in
cluded the sale of-$5,000,000 of the Eric
Railroad's consolidated T per cent, bonds,
clearing up its near maturities. The
Missouri Pacific sold $18,000,000 of its
first and refunding bonds on a 6.10 per
cent, basis. Tbe $6,000,000 of the city of
Solssona 6 per cent, external bonds, of
fend on a 7.63 per cent, yield basis, were
taken up quickly by investors. Indeed,
quiok ovemublcriptionB characterized all
the week's ftrancing, testifying to an un
slaked investment appetite. The South
western Power a.nd Ldpht Company sold
$3 000.000 of its bonds on a 6.70 per cent,
basis and the Municipal Gas Company
of Albany sold $2,000,000 of Its bonds on
a 5 20 per cent, basis. The days of high
* ou'pon rate? for well secured bonds has
passed, no new issues last week carrying
more than a 6 per cent, coupon,
?whereas three or four months ago <.
7'., or 8 per cent, coupons predominated.

Elastic Ribbons and Braids fori
Women's Wear in Midst
of Small Boom.
Elastic ribbons and braids for women's)
dress articles are having a small boom.
A manufacturer of those lines States
that the increased demand of the last
few weeks has been caused by seasonal
demand for sport garments which makes
ordinary eyes and hooks and .snap
fasteners less desirable for dresses. The
popularity of blouses has been a large
factor in increasing sales. White elas
tics lead the demand, but manufacturers
say that lighter shades also are having
good Bales. Little change in price is
noted from last season's quotations.
Too Much Publicity to Tweeds.
Many factors in the trade believe that
tweeds are suffering from over publicity.
This is believed to be particularly true
In the women's wear division. A trouble
which has attended the sudden popular
ity of that fabric has been that mills
suffering: from lack of business seized 1
on that cloth, and the result was t'iiat
deliveries began at the same time and
the market had too much of It. The
natural reaction has been an oversupply,
in which retailers have undercut compe
tition as it arose. AVliat is ahepd of
tweeds Is a question that fcven the ?*ost
favored advocates of the fabric are un
able to answer.
Motion Plotnrea In Bnalncu.
A conference of manufacturers inter
ested in industrial motion pictures to be
held in "Washington on April 11, has been
called by the National Association of
Manufacturers. The object of the confer
ence will be to prepare plans for enlarg- ;
ing the scope of the motion picture bu- '
reau of the association in order that all |
the country's manufacturers may be |
served, not only with pictures through !
proper channels in this country, but also ;
in other countries. Systematic distribu- j
t!on of industrial pictures will be, it is i
thought, of great Industrial and com
mercial value to this country not only
at home, but also abroad.
Gray fioodn Hauler.
The gray goods market closed on Sat
urday with activity curtailed and busi
ness confined to a few odd lot sales of
high count prints. Prices were un
changed from Friday's closing quota
tions. The week saw an easier cotton
market, which resulted In limited trad
ing in print cloths and a slump of prices
for less needed goods from V6c. to %c.
Sheeting lines, however, had a generally
stronger tone, and much talk concerning
sheeting rumors was heard. Rumors of
an inquiry for 2,000 bales of 36 inch five
yard goods for export were heard on Fri
day. The specialty lines were lifeless j
throughout the week.

row Wilson Foundation, reported yester

ers and pupils to the $1,000,000 Wilson
