Relative May Weakness in
Contrast to New Crop Stead
iness Market Feature.
Latest weather developments, which
were favor^ile, resulted In sufficient
local speculative pressure to depress
yeoicrdaj^s cotton market about 10 to
32 poiryfs, but part of that loss was re
Bnipelf before the closing. A feature of
jJkffo pesslon wa3 the relative weakness
' of thy at times against steadiness in
the new crops, which after early de
pression came back to about the level
of Saturday's close. Final bids showed
October to be a point net higher and
other months 4 to 17 points net lower.
Considering the action of Liverpool
?nd the clear weather map, yesterday's
warket made a good show. The Liver
pool futures market broke sharply after
early steadiness, probably reflecting
eld bull liquidation and straddle selling
tn that market against purchases of new
crop positions here. The official weather
map was generally clear and season
able. with only a trace of precipitation
anywhere in the belt. Should favorable
conditions continue, or even favorable
conditions with only slight showers, crop
estimates will have to be enlarged, es
pecially in regard to Texas.
It was not surprising that the price of
May contracts dropped below tenderable
basis in the absence of spot demand of
cpnsequonce. The premium of May over
July was reduced to about 40 points
yesterday after having been more than
60 at ore time last week. Should there
he a revival of spot demand the pre
mium undoubtedly would widen once
fnore. All In all the session was quiet
and uninteresting, with price fluctua
tions narrow.
The local market for spot cotton was
quiet. 15 points lower at 17.90 cents for
middling. The New Orleans market was
?teady, net unchanged at 3 6.63 cents for
middling. Its sales in that center were
of 1.3S0 bales.

BUSINESS NOTES
AND TRADE NEWS
Increased Activity in Worsted
Indicates Favorable Easter
Buying Tendency.
A favorable tendency of the present
Easter buying is increased Interest in
worsteds. Kellers agree that the situa
tion has taken a turn for the better,
one agent stating that he has disposed
of all his heavyweights and will have
to enter the market again for fall trade.
The opinion that cut price tendencies
in tweeds is helping to turn retail de
mand to worsteds because the trade
anticipates volume business in that
fabric is held. Whatever the ultimate
outcome may be it is certain that the
present retail business is having a good
effect on the worsted market.
Short Period (or Spring Hull.
The late opening of Easter is said to
make the period for selling men's
spring hats of extremely short dura
tion. With barely a month intervening
between the official opening of spring
and the opening of tlhe straw hat sea
son. the opinion that sales will have to
be fast and large to make for a normal
turnover is held. The present weather
is said to be causing dealers concern, as
it is felt that 'varm weather now will
make of poteR;-'! felt hat customers
straw hat buyer. . That phase of the
situation, however, i? not worrying
straw hat dealers.
Ostrich Sales Increase.
The ostrich and coque market, ac
cording to a well known manufacturer
of ostrich accessories, is rapidly re
suming Its former strong position, as
a direct result. It is believed, of the
rapidly Increasing vogue for feather
accessories. The textile division of the
United States Bureau of Commerce
issued recently a bulletin, in which it
was stated that sales of ostrich feathers
in the Port Elizabeth municipal market
exceeded the total values of any other
month In the last half year. The new
voigue for feathers is not confined to
fans and millinery, as heretofore. The
introduction of the feather fan for sum
mer is said to come very close to be
ginning a new era in Che feather ac
cessories Industry. Articles of feathers
usually have been confined to winter
use. ?
Shortage of Wireless Equipment.
A large volume of wireless business
is being lost because of shortage of sup
plies and equipment, according to the
April review of retail trade compiled
by the National Retail Dry Goods As
sociation. Although the Westinghouse
interests, which have only one mem
bership in the Kadlo Corporation of
America, are producing monthly $2,000,
000 worth Of equipment, the demand is
said to be leaving that and other
sources of supply far behind t)he po
tential sales. Wireless apparatus is ex
pected to be one of the conspicuous
features of the national merchandise
fair in August.
Linings Play Important Role.
A jobber of silk linings notes an In
creasing tendency among cloak and suit
manufacturers to demand high colors
and fancy decorative effects forallnlng
purposes, which is in direct contrast to
exclusive use of plain colors and sub
dued designs demanded earlier In the
season. Crepe de chine is said to be
playing an Important role In the new
vogue. The opinion that linings will be
an Important sales factor in garment re
tailing. bccause of their distinct style
value prevails.
