Local Give ami Take and Even
ing Up by Wall Street
Feature Trading.
The cotton market continued yester
day to be dormant and uninteresting,
tt waj> a session of local give and tako
and evening up by Wall ftreet profes
sionals. Little headway was made. The
volume of new business was, perhaps,
?mailer than It hail been at eny tlni'- in
the present season, tho market opening
with a bulge of 3 to 9 points, and then
slipping slightly on prospects* of more
favorable weather to-day. The closing
range was narrow with two months un
changed and others C points lower to a
point higher.
The market's opening touch of tlrm
nesa was due to two factors, the one an
official weather map showing scattered
showers over much of the eastern and
central belts and the other betterment
of Liverpool cables, which were higher
than looked for. Liverpool futures
prices were due to be a penny point to
4Vj penny points net higher, but opened
7 h> 8 points up, and at the time of the
-sail had advanced J to 13 points.
Manchester demand for the actual was
fair, about 10,000 bales changing hands,
with a decline of 19d. for middling.
One of the features was the heavy |
export movement, total day's clearances
amounting to more than 30,000 bales.
Doubtless those large exports would be
more of a market factor were it not for
the fact that a large proportion has been
shipped out on consignment. At the
moment the bigger operators are simply
standing by and doing little or nothing
In the market. The proximity of the
extended EaWor holidays Ir, also keeping
down the volume of new business.
The National Ginners' Association's
report. Issued yesterday, placed total
consumption of cotton by domestic mills
in March at 524,000 bales, in contrast to
488,000, tho Census Bureau's estimate of
consumption In February. Tho trade
thought the report a little too high.
The local spot market waa net un
changed at 17.90 cents. The New Or
leans spot market was 13 points iowot
at 16.50 cents for middling.

Clothing Salesmen Start Nest
Week on Road With Sam
ples of Fall Lines.
Clothing manufacturers plan to take
full advantage of present weather to
send next week salesmen on the road
with fall lines. Showrooms -here will be
opened with fa.l merchandise offerings.
The opinion that spring business has
been of good volume and thai a con
tinuation of present weather conditions
will place irferchanta In a favorable pos
tlon for fill In goods prevails. Optimism
is based largely on buyers belief that
depleted stock* now will necessitate ad
ditional merchandise for fall and winter
trade. The best part of the fall business
In expected to develop In overcoating
lines.
Soft Collar* and Oxford Shirti.
Reported increased sales of -whlta
Oxford shirts with attached collars are
not being received with joy by dealers
in soft collars. Although sales of the
latter are reported as sat'sfactory, the
opinion that if present warm weather
continues for any longth of time It will
result in losing volume sales is held.
The last few days of warm weather has
had the effect of turning consumer buy
ing to Oxford shirts, with the result that
considerable inroads have been made into
the soft collar business. The price fac
tor is said to have made for more con
servative buying.
Chart ShoirlnK Sllli Imports.
To controvert efforts being made by
oppoflnK Interests to have the present
catch all clause on woven fabrics of 65
per cent, ad valorem reduced to 45 per
cent, the Silk Association of America
has sent a bulletin and chart to Its
manufacturer members urging them to
acquaint their representatives In the
Congress with the tariff situation In the
silk industry. The chart shows relative
values of Imports of broad silks Into and
domestic production of such silks in the
United States. The Increase in relative
percentage* of its imports and domestic
production from 1919 to 1921. inclusive,
la shown to be 93 V4 per cent., and the
actual yardage Increase o?" the amount
of imports in 1921 compared with that
of 1119 was 48 per cent.
En< Collect!*? Bargaining.
Comment on the announcement sent
to the Amalgamated Clothing Workers
of America by the Clothing Manufactur
ers Association of New York, Inc., that
the present agreement between the two
organisations providing for collectlv*
bargaining would not be renewed, heard
yesterday In the trade, was to the effect
that future labor agreement* In this
market would have to be on an In
dividual basis. Most manufacturers sr?
agreed that It will be many years before
there will be another collective bargain
ing agreement with the union. As a
result ?f the refusal to renew the agree
ment It Is expected that the clothing
manufacturers' division will disband.
Better Test Is Silks.
Despite tendencies among dealers to
shade prices to obtain butlnese a gen
erally better feeling Is taking hold of
the raw silk market. Hosiery manu
facturers In particular are displaying
more confidence In prices by ordering
futures In fair volume. The bulk of
such business, however. Is developing
from the full fashioned Industry, seam
less manufacturers apparently belr.g
well supplied with raw stock. The with
drawal of the Japanese Government
from active support of the raw market
