Steal lnt? In tks Lm4. United State* Steal common stock, one* known mm tho leader of th* mar ket. assumed Its old place at the fore front of yesterday's advance. In vary heavy trading-, which aggravated only 209 short of 100,000 shares. It advanced more than 2 points to a new high mark for this year of 99 %. Many trailers expected tho stock to cross par before tho close, and those on the floor not too busy to give thought to the mat ter took up positions near the Steel post to Join In a demonstration that they expected to tako place when Steel hit par. But as was the case before, their expectations failed to materialize and individual operators' efforts to put the stock to 100 were Ineffectual. The in terests which were really behind yes j terday*a move In Steel common had no intention of putting It to 100 and did not intend to let some one else do It and take their market away from them. For that reason Just before the close tho profit taking sales in Steel were allowed to depress the market frac tionally to a closing mark of 99?&. safe ly below par and yet sufficiently higher on the day to make the results of the day's operations in the stock satisfac tory. TTattonal Lead. It could not be learned whether or not the contemplated payment would be in cash or stock. Katy'* Oeed Earning*. It was able, however, to save net operating income of $1,111,869, which was an Increase of 25.5 per cent, compared with the net operating Income of the first two months of 1921. It Is calculated that the road's 1921 earnings would have<been sufficient to cover the new company's interest charges and the 7 per cent, dividend on its preferred stock with a very small margin for Its no par stock.
