8 FOREST SET AFIRE BY FALLING METEOR Shook Folt for 50 Miles anil Skies Illuminated in Two States. TAIL OF BLUE FLAME Houses in Two Towns in Virginia Are Shaken by Terrific Explosion. Norfolk, Va., May 12.?The shock or a twenty ton meteor which crashed to 'hq ground in an Isolated 3pot in Nottoway county, twelve miles northwest of Blackstone. late last night, was felt /or a radius of fifty miles, while the brilliant glare of the incandescent l*>dy Illuminated the heavens over southern Virginia and sections of North Carolina. Tha trail of light as tho meteor fell lu a alow curve from the aenlth at an angle of about 43 degrees was visible In (Norfolk, Richmond and at pointss along the James River, creating general excitement and even consternation on the part of negroes. The meteor, composed of a metalic substance, crashed into a grovo of oak trees with an explosive roar some distance from any house, making a hole with an area of 500 square feet and burying several trees with it. Flames shot up. which were visible for many miles, while trees caught Are. ;v party 01 scientists a.iu iii'wnjtaprr men Immediately left Richmond and Norfolk for the scene, but the results of their investigation were not known to-night, as the place is isolated and telephone communication was unavailable. At Lowrenceville, 100 miles west of here, windows wore rattled and houses shaken by the fall of the meteor, while at Chas? City similar effects w-ere noted. Automobilists on the highways in Mecklenburg county said it seemed as though their cars had cuught fire, so great was the illumination. In Norfolk the meteor appeared to be about half the diameter of the full moon und much like a street arc light. Its tail, of orange brilliance with a sharp blue flame fading out at the extreme end, apparently was about ten or twelve times as long and fully as broad us the body. In Richmond a streak of light was noticed before the ball of fire was seen swirling through space to be followed by the reverberations of an oxplosipn. The entire Southeastern skies were illuminated as if by a flash of lightning rnd a burst of flame. i IT I DO | What the Gen j Europe froi of blood" th ica in?
