ShUT??; BUSINESS NOTES AND TRADE NEWS Garment Manufacturers Plan Cooperative Purchasing on Large Scale. For the purpose of extending coopers- ! live purchasing activities of the manu facturers of the K?rment center capital a permanent buying department Is to be organized, according to plans made public yesterday by Jacob rtapoport of Jacob Rape port & Co. The committee of four originally appointed to institute the purchasing department has recom mended that the group be enlarged to ; Include eleven members. It Is planned to divide the new committee Into four | divisions, three members to supervise silk purchases, two to supervise woolen j purchases, two for fur purchases and three for miscellaneous purchases, with one member ns chairman of the group. "We mean to secure the best men we j can to head our different departments." said Mr. Rapoport, "and we mean to i attempt to purchase In quantities al most everything that goes into the manufacturing of cloaks, suits and dresses. We have gained much experi ence through our cooperative purchases In the last few months and are now ready to try out our plans on a more extensive scale. It Is hoped to have the entire department fully organized within the next two or three weeks and cooperative purchasing on a large scale will be undertaken immediately." Expert Hlaher Yarn Price*. "Cotton yarn inquiries have broad ened during the last week, and though the volume of business actually put through is not largo. It is considerably more than was done the week before." says the weekly review of a prominent manufacturer. "Buyers are beginning ] to realize that prices are not likely to j be any lower, and the outlook In the i raw cotton market brings up the possl- j bility of a gradual rise In yarn quota- | lions owing to higher raw material costs. The price of yarns to-day Is j practically the Fame as it was three j months ago, and buyers, though ex pecting no definite decline in values, can see little danger of an advance. The weaving trade furnished the bulk of the business of the week, and carded ! yarns were in practically the same po sition as combed ^numbers, so far as j active buying Is concerned." (?ond Trade in Vmlerwenr. The silk underwear manufacturing trade has undergone marked Improve ment in the last few weeks. A fore most producer reported that more re tail buyers visited his showrooms in the last month than ever before. lie j noted a mofe optimistic feelir.g among i merchants. "There is little chance of ! lower prices," the factor declared. "Prices which we are receiving to-day for our merchandise," he said "are be low'replacement costs, figured at pre vailing quotations on raw silk. With the primary market continuing to rise, we may be forced to advance our prices in the near future." Hnrlnp Trading Unlet. Trading ^n the local burlap market continued quiet yesterday, but prices re mained firm. There were some in quiries received, but they failed to ma terialize in the shape of orders. A prom inent broker and dealer attributed the market's dullness to the railroad and coal strikes. "Real activity Is expected as Boon as these mr^jor labor disputes are settled," he said. Holders asked 5.85 cents for lightweights and 9 cents for heavies, although there were few sales at these figures, hs buyers' views of values were slightly""~T>'elow these levels. The Calcutta market was re ported as strong. Lightweight* in that market were quoted at 6.85, while heavies were at 8 U cents, according to cables received by local brokers. Crude Driinr Prices I.ower, The week in the crude drug market was uneventful and little buying was reported, says Drug and Chenxk'al Mar kets. Therf were numerous price changes, however, with the general trend downward. Phenol prices are still advancing, and It is bfeiieved in the trade that this crude product will be im ported at an early date. Benzol produc tion also has been curtailed, owing to the I coal strike, and makers are experiencing j difficulty In filling contracts. Flaxseed I prices declined during the week and I good crop reports had a weakening effect on linseed oil. Other vegetable oils were inactive. Cotton flooila Continue Firm. The local gray goods market displayed continueil strength yesterdsj, although trading was not anything too brisk. An increased demand is believed to be ap proaching. Mills are firm In their de mands and confidently anticipate higher quotations In the near future. Holders continued to quote the standard 3*Vii inch, 64?60 print cloths, at 8*4 centT Asking prices for the 68?72s ruled nt 9% cents. The market In sheetings wa3 quiet, but prices remained firm. marne day proclaimed. Gov. Miller lr?ea People to Ob nerve September O. ALBANY, Aug. 30.?*Gov.
