More artistic refugees from Soviet Russia arrived last night in New York under the chaperonage of Miss Elisabeth Marbury, in association with the Messrs. Schubert, and spread their tent In the Booth Theater and presented the "Revue Russe." The Shuberts are sa d to have seen them during their long engagement at the Theater Femlna In Paris and commissioned the wily Miss Marbury to lure them to the rock bound shores of Manhattan. Now Marie Kousnezoff, who has sung at the Opera in Paris, and came here to join the forces of the Chicago Opera Company a few years ago. is head of the new organization. Concert goers with long memories may recall a single appearance of the lady with the Russian Orchestra. She was surrounded last night by a group of her countr.vpeople. While their names will suggest little to the metropolitan playgoer, it may be a necessary part of the record that there were on the distaff side Mmes. Morenschmldt Eeontowich, Platonova, Miraieva, Sanina, Shlskine, Smirnova and Tanlna and MM. I'osemkowski, Aleneff, Dniestroff, Markoff, Ratoff, Benoia and Voljanin. The program was of course the usual cabaret arrangement which is so well -..-J ._ .11..?.... nnUmln | brought together by such influences us | those which have caused un upheaval i In the artistic life of Russia. Mme. Kousnezoff, who assembled the troup, did not in the least stand on her dignity 1 as a prima donna. She sang remarkably 1 well and her voice while shrill Is power; ful and her technique quite equal to the | difficulties of Verdi's "A fors e lui." i Hut the Russian soprano does not i stop here. She dances a Spanish fan! dango and shedding her embroidered shawl, sings a comic song in Spanish with as much brio and nearly as much humor as Fanny Brlce. She even looks cross eyed when It Is necessary to point the fun. Mme. Kouszenoff also contributed to the program a peasant song from the Ukraine which was most feelingly sung. If the industrious directress of the entertainment stood at one artistic end possibly the efficient ape stood at the _ oth?-r. He climbed into the auditorium, visited the upper boxes on his way about the balcony and finaWy climbed with a wonderful display of strength a rope which hung from the celling of I the stage. "The Caucasian Obezianna," ! described him on the program. But the arrobat was not a Russian. He was a ! French performer from the Folies Bergcre. The audience liked him even if ho WHERE TO DINE. New Organization Coming iter Femina in Paris. were not a serious Russian ape. however, and called him before the curtain. The most Interesting numbers on the j entertaining program which was received with continuous applause were J those typically Russian. No other lo| cal color is so strong in its influence on a stage performance as the Russian. It is more permeating and characteristic than any other. Liast night, the great Leon Rakst had provided a number of his scenes, grotesque, Imaginative and always glowing with color. The Russian frolic with its dancing trio, the visit of the regiment which dei parted and left Qrounka mourning, the rather crude courtship of the curate who j made love to the cook, spurred on by a { gigantic Cupid while the priest was away, were some of the delightful farcical episodes. All the ingeneousness of ; the Russian was in these pieces. So was it in the romance of the little Punch and Judy theater, where the human beings acted their romantic story like the little puppets. "Old Spain" was beautiful In color and movement, with Mme. Kousnezoff danc! ing her Spanish steps and the rest inov; ing in unison about her. There was a | shadow of tragedy in the highly expressionistlc pantomime by Leon Uakst j called "Cowardice." The youthful lover 1 was'murdered by the possessor of two maidms, while the populace swayed backward and forward in dogged lndlf: ference to the anguish of the two lovers. Rakst not only designed the scenery and the really strikingly novel dresses | but devised the socalled mimodraina. It I was an effective contrast to the other numbers which made up a rarely charming and varied program. It should carry 1 still further the prevailing admiration I iur e v cry 111 j 11 g uiisMan lit wits an ui cue ; theater. The audience appeared to love every detail of the new Russian revue. Society was unusually represented for this time of year and on so warm a night. In tha upper box at the left of the house were the young Prince and Princess Michael Cantacuzene, with whom was Mr. Francis H. B. Byrne.
