Chicago Prices Up Fractionally

kct Also Helps. |
Chicago, Oct. 30.?Decreasing supplies 1
of -wheat in the United States together '
with advancing prices ut Liverpool j :
caused an upward trend to-day in tlio |
wheat market h^re. The closing was
Hrm at the same as Saturday's finish to :
/ to %c higher, with December $1.15 to1,
L $1.15 and May $1.13<? to $1.1314. Corn
finished a shade off to >8c gain : oats
14c lower to 14c up, and provisions
4 varying from 2c decline to a rise of 23c. ;
Inspired by unexpected strength In
Liverpool quotations, wheat traders in
Chicago took generally to the buying
side at the opening. Many of tho
early buyers, however, soon switched
to selling because of reports that the
dry area of the Western winter crop
belt had been benefitted by light to
heavy showers. Indications of lessened
ear scarcity Southwest counted tempor-,
arily also as a bearish factor.
Announcement about inidduy that tne
domestic visible supply total showed
1.595,000 bushels falling off instead of
an unexpected liberal increase gave
1 bulls an advantage during the remainder
of the session. The upward tendency of
tho market in the late dealings was
helned too bv cossin current that, exnort
business was under way and that millers
were buying hard wheat at Omaha.
Corn and oats were relatively, easy
as a result of prospective enlarged re- j
celpts of corn.
Heavy shipments of lard and meats
made the provision market average
higher despite lower quotations on hogs. '

BUSINESS NOTES
AND TRADE NEWS
Wholesale Trade Continues to
Show Improvement?Price
Trend Upward.
Tho Improved conditions In primary
markets continue and merchandise la on
i firm basis with strong- tendencies toward
advances, says Thomas A. Fernley(
secretary and treasurer of tho National
Wholesale Dry Goods Association.
'Many wholesalers, commission meriliants
and manufacturers aro opposed
lo radical advances," Mr. Fern ley sayB,
'and believe that moderation should be
xercisca in gradually margins up prices
if this be necessary. Members of the
lasociation report good business and better
volume of sales than last year, and
ire Inclined to carry adequate stocks because
of confidence in recent primary
market prices. Some wholesalers believe
that there will be a marked
scarcity of goods In the next six months.
Most mills are sold up for several
months uhead and are loath to commit
themselves further,"
Another Advance in Silk.
Further advances of from ten to fifteen
cents featured an extremely active
Yokohama raw silk market, yesterday.
Transactions totaled 3,000 bales and
were largely for American account. In
tho local market, stiffening tendencies
continued with trading slightly more active.
Although the general broad silk
market has Improved considerably as a
result of the advancing primary market,
the recent advances have tended to
check distribution of plain broad silks.
Buyers appear lo be holding aloof from
the market until conditions become more
settled, ami the small current buying
represents only Immediate wants of the
consumers. The belief is spreading that
raw silk prices have reached unreasonably
levels, but importers Insist that
further advances arc likely.
Protest Against Prices.
Ketailers are not taking kindly to advanced
prices, according to the National
Wholesale Dry Goods Association. Only
In the South and Southwest is there any
willingness on the part oC re^tilcrs to
purchase higher priced merchandise, anil
this change in attitude may be traced
to the maintenance of high prices on
cotton. In the Northwest or farming region,
retailers reported that farmers
have shown a determined opposition to
buying anything at advanced prices.
Staples seem to be about the only merchandise
the farmers are Interested in.
Seen Good Iluslness Ahead.
General business conditions in the
West have improved considerably, and
a good fall and Christmas holiday business
can be expected, says the head of
a large chain store company, lie continues:
"It may be true that the
farmer has been compelled to spend
the greater part of this year's income
upon his maturing notes, but, even so, he
is in a mucii better frame of mind and
able to spend more money than has been
Lhe case for several years. The results of
the improved prices of agricultural
products already are making themselves
felt."
Rug Prices Revised.
The M. J. Whittall Associates have
issued a new price list of their rugs,
showing values at slightly higher levels
than at the previous opening. The new
prices arc effective to-morrow and aro
subject to change without notice. The
company stated that no new accounts
will be opened for less titan twenty-five
carpet sizes. It was said that the demand
for Brussels and Wilton Jacquard
fabrics, worsted and woolen, is so keen
that they have been compelled to adopt
a plan of giving each dealer his share of
the production. This will make it impossible
to take any orders for figured wool
goods larger than house quantities. Other
carpet and rug interests announced new
higher prices several weeks ago.
Price Spread In Leather.
A strong demnnd for heavy leathers
has developed in the last month, according
to the Merchants National
Bank of Boston. "This is reflected back
into the raw material market," the bank
says, "causing an unusual concentration
of demand on the heavier hides and
skins and' an unusual spread between
the prices of heavy and light descriptions
of raw stock. The spread between
heavy native steers -*nd branded
cows, fot example, which nominally is
only about 2 cents, is now C or 7 cents.
Hides and leather have risen to new
high levels. The raw material continues
to keep a little in advance of the
manufactured product, and tanners still
complain that they cannot operate
profitably when they figure costs on the
present prices of hides."
