Both the situa? tions referred to have on the one Wand been denounced without stint nnd on the other side, warmly ex? tolled. The trial of the Ku Klux Klan in a mountain cave near Piedmont, S. C, Is realistically presented. A negro accused of the murder of a 'white girl is brought before the wWlte-rdbed and masked Clansman, denying his guilt with screams or terror. When placed under hypnotic Influence the eyes of the wretch become llxed and glassy; he sees' as in a vision bis awful crime and rehearses every step of It?how he lured tho girl on and on by Imitating tho notes of a bird, how ho seized her by the throat, how she escaped! his clutches and how finally frenzied with fear sho threw herself to her death over a precipice. After tho story is told the spell of hypnotism Is removed, and the shrieking pris? oner Is dragged off to execution, while the Clansmen, waving aloft the flaming cross of St. Andrew, j send a trusty messenger across the border to summon their North ?Carolina ibrelhren for the I'fe-arid-l death struggle with the blacks'. The other scene shows the at? tempt of the then mulatto Lieuten? ant-Governor of South Carolina to force an alliance between hlmscif and the daughter of a white man.' The girl's father, Stoneman has1 organized the Union Ixuiguo of blacks and has encouraged and pro-1 tecled Lynch In every way. | The negro is about to have tho marriage ceremony performed by a preacher of his own rnce when the Ku Klux Klan a pears on the scene add saves the girl. Old Stoneman sorrowfully acknow-.l ledges his mistake?that of "trying to make water run up hill, to turn r. negro into a white man. an animal into a king." He says he will go to Washington and ask tho govern? ment to 'withdraw tho Federal i t loops from Southern territory and to restore pence and prosperity to the. stricken South.
