Yesterday afternoon tho doors or the County High School wore thrown open to the public for the purpose of giving them an opportunity or witnessing the splendid exhibit pre? pared by the schools of the county. The academic work was supplement? ed by the manual training In trio primary grades, and the special de? partments of the High School In eluding the art, department of busi? ness, and the work in science de? partment. The Work In Grammar Grades. The work in tho grades was es? pecially attractive, tho plan adopted was lo give each teacher one leat In th'e cabinet, to bo arranged ac? cording to her own ideas and then tho besr work of the three schools?the Phoebus Graded School, Shies Eaton and West End Academies, was submitted to a committee to be arranged. The academic work was displayed to advantage from the first grade to the High school and was the source of much favorable comment on ttie part of iho patrons. The Washing? ton and Lee chart attracted consid? erable attention. The local industries, Including tbo ? tlsh and crab, were treated by the pupils of all the grades and tho es says on St. John's church and His? toric llnmpton were ably handled by tho students of the'three schools. The High School Exhibit. Tito exhibit m this department was far beyond the hopes of the mo3t sagtttne. One cabinet consisting of thirty-three charts was reserved Tor the special work In tho High school. Each teacher had charge of the work in Is department and tbo students contributed their every effort to the success of the local as well as the national exhibit. The Department of Business. Anton's the special exhibits of the High School, the department of busi? ness took rank with the first. This work was opened in September and all the work embraced la of strictly business use. After bookkeeping and shorthand, special emphasis lias been placed on penmanship and rapid calculations. The penmanship exhibit showed some excellent specimens of muscular movement, first the drills and then plain, easily written penmanship; leg ii'lllty and speed being aparently the first consideration. For first year work these specimens showed excel lent student work. The rap'/ calcu? lation work was particularly interest? ing and useful. Tho sheets showed timed examples in interest, invoicing, multiplication ami addition, some of these consisting of ten-item sheets in interest and invoicing correctly done in one minute and 5 seconds: others show 300 figures added in three min? utes, thirty-five seconds?all <1 ?t rirsl year work. Commercial arithmetic, was represented by some practical every-day problems, partial note set? tlements, equation of accounts, ship settlements, etc. The touch^hiethotl Is employed in the typo-writing de? partment and the specimens shown were particularly fine, Including from first chart, lessons to the most diffi? cult tabulating, all done entirely by touch. Some very neat notes were contrib? uted by the shorthand olassosv?aman? uensis, letter and reporting notes, ac? companied by transcripts.
