BILL RUSSELL of the World

the United State Olympci
Champion basketball team had
an audience composed of many
Boston Red Sox officials and
players last week. The bad

crease good inter-racial rela

certainly has been vastly en
couraged by Walter Brown’s
investment in a sepia star
And Tom must have been en
couraged by Ted Williams’ re
cent defense of Joe Louis.

TED WILLIAMS, like Vice-
President Nixon, has been
wrongly charged with a racial
bias toward colored people
Some people blamed Ted. Some
blamed Yawkey. And some
Cronin. Well, Ted has been the
only one of tiie trio to speak.
No athlete has defended Joe
Louis mor than Ted. And last
week, speaking of the N. Y.
Giant sepia rookie, Andy Rog
ers, Ted said: “That kid Andy
Rogers is more my type. I like
him.” And Ted went on to
praise the new rookie.

Dr. Howard F. Root of Brook

nounced.
At a meeting of the district

As President of the Boston
Equal Rights League, it is
most gratifying to me that
Assistant Attorney General
Keesler H. Montgomery has
been named Shies Cdhnsel and
head of the Legal division of
the State Housing Board by
Attorney General George Fin
gold. /
This is the first appoint
ment of a Colored American
as head of a division in the
Department of the Attorney
General in the long history of
the Commonwealh. Attorney
Montgomery has served with
the State Housing Board for
four years as associate counsel
prior to becoming head of the
division as counsel to this
State Agency.
This merited promotion
proves what Daniel Webster
once said of the Bay State:

ing general principles were ac
cepted:
1. That every physician
in the Society be urged
to take part in the drive
to inoculate all persons
under 40 against poliomy
elitis.
2. That all physicians
cooperate by giving injec
tions in their offices and
by urging their patients to
participate. In the interest
of expediting the program,
it is urged that fees for
injections be minimal.
3. That special consi
deration should be given
to large families and to
large groups of persons to
be inoculated at the same
time.
4. That each district me
dical society cooperate
with local boards of
health, local chapters of
. the National Foundation
for Infantile Paralysis, and
other interested organiza
tions in promoting and ex
pediting the program.
Each district medical society
president, Dr. Root pointed
out, heads the campaign irt
his respective area. "There is
no one formula,” Dr. Root
continued, “for the conduct
of the campaign throughout
the state. The general prin
ciples adopted by the commit
tee of presidents will merely
serve as guides for district
presidents to follow in setting
up local programs of promo
tion and participation.”

YOU CAN HELP ME WALK BETTER - In spite of the
fact that only 15 percent of the families of Massachu
setts have contributed to the annual Easter Seal ap
peal for crippled children and adults, little Johnny, 4,
smiles in the hope that Easter weekend will see that
the modest $285,000 state-wide goal is reached. Johnny,
severely crippled because of a spinal condition, is learn
ing to walk at one of the Massachusetts Easter Seal
centers. The Easter Seal campaign is the chief source
of support of the Bay State Society for the Crippled
and Handicapped.
Adult Jaywalkers
The school children of today are taught to watch
traffic signals, obey the traffic officers’ signals, cross
streets only at designated point, etc., and this teaching
has undoubtedly saved rnany , children's lives. But it
it too bad that the good habits thus formed in child
hood do not seem to carry over into adulthood.
Ask any traffic officer what gives him the worst
headaches and he’ll tell you it is the grownup jay
walker who ought to know better.

Tips On
Touring
Women’s Travel Authority
How To Save Gasoline
Gasoline is one of the
biggest bargains on your
travel budget, so make the
best of it. Here are some
tips on how to save gasoline
on your motoring vacation:
1. Don’t race the motor
when you’re starting or
waiting at a stop light.
2. If your car has ‘over
drive’, use it for turnpike
' travel.
3. Drive smoothly-not with
sudden bursts of speed.
When you’ve left the super
highway, slow down. The
faster you go, the fewer
miles per gallon you’ll get.
• 4. Keep your tires inflated
to proper pressure. Soft
tires overwork the engine.
5. Sluggish spark plugs, a
dirty carburetor. leaking
fuel line, slipping clutch -
all waste gasoline.
6. Avoid excessive use of
low gear and choke.
7. When coming to a stop,
let up on accelerator well in
advance, and allow car to
slow down. Then apply
brakes gently. Zooming up
to a red light and jamming
on your brakes wastes gaso
line and wears the brakes.
It’s also dangemiß.
