Eldora is to be con:gratulated over the termination of the tov;vnsite controversy, The camp has a brilliant: future in pros pect and it would be too bad to ruin its chances through internal strife, The understanding reached by the labor con.gress at St. Louis is that the allied labor forces will assist'the miners. The cause of labor tan adopt no better motto than “United We Stand.” With all Weyler's faults he still com mands admiration for the masterful way | in which he is piling up personal wealth for use when the Spanish are finally evicted from Cuba. It will not be he that holds the sack: e A despatch to a Denver paperattempts to show how Mark Hanna.influences.the people with whom he has politicai deal ings., A shorter and clearer explanation was revealed by the check expose in the Ohio Populist convention. Business with the various “Schlatters’ that are starring in Chicago, New York, Cincinnati an 1 other big cities is rather falling off of late. The comparatively small amount of gold brought back by the Portland from the Klondyke will further prove that the “dead sure thing” mine is not.an accept ed reality even there, The description of the fusion scheme of the Wolcottites with the Silver Repub licans, as evidenced by state action by the /aiter party, may be. summed up as a plot gone glimmering. Boulder was today inspected by the Texas School Teachers’ association com mittee with a view to locating a summer school here. The advantages that will accrue to Boulder in the event of the lo cating of the institution at this point are manifold. The association gives assure ance of an attendance of at least one ‘housand teachers a year. This estimate will be conceded as conservative, out of the state membership of fifteen thousand many of whom independently visit Cclo rado annually. The plan will be some what similar to that of the Chautauqua of New York. Its purposes and aims will be educational. The classes of peo ole attracted thither will be literary in their pursuits. The general tendency will be elevating. From a mercenary standpoint no little benefit wiil accrue ?irom the annual advent of one thousand people who will bring considerable money into the community. As a starter in)r a general tourist trade, the establish l ment would be excellent. Ttis tothe in terest of all to secure them The Case of Evangelina Cisneros. While there have been perhaps mis understandings of facts, exaggerations of statement and some resulting hysteria connected with the outburst of sympathy for the unfortunate Evangelina Cisneros, ‘ the Cuban girl now confined ir prison in 'Havana on a charge of conspiracy, the mists that originally surrounded'the case are clearing away sufficiently to show that there is good reasoan for the move ment now on foot to persuade the Queen of Spain to pardon the young woman. The most tavorable aspect of the situa tion, from. the. Spanish point of view, justifies the -outcry for the extension of consideration for the unhappy girl. It is perfectly apparent that the governor of the Isle of Pines, who charges that he was “lured” by the prisoner that he might be assassinated, was himself gui'ty of a gross offense against her, and the suspicion is reasonable that much of the .conspiracy story bas-been manufactured to conceal his wrong-doing. The early reparts.af the case.stated-that-Miss Cis neros was being confined in a horribly unfit prison, and .that she was suffering from the-.cruel metheds so plainly in vogue in Cuba. A late dispatch from Ccnsul General Lee indicates that her condition has been somewhat ameliorat ed, but she is still awaiting trial. There is enough evident equity in her case to ‘ warrant the presentation to the queen of 'a powerful plea tor pardon, and appar ‘ently the movement in her behalf has at tained such proportions and includes such a weight of influence that the peti tion will be seriously considered,—Wash ington Star.
