A newspaper man of übiquitous, roving and erratic characteristics, but a rare fellow, a gen erous man, great hearted, large souled, kindly, genial, loveable, Mr. Cheeiey’s last new;papsr venture was at Fort Lupton, but his many changes of resi : dence had given him a reputation and ; popularity confined only b. the limits of the state. We tcel a personal loss in his death and know that such «n expression finds ar echo in many a Colorado news paper sanctum this week. Colorado's spectacular senator is be ing tickled under the chin by the Wash ington Star, fog his faithful allegiance to the grand old party. It scarcely needed the recommendation of a gold bug sheet to rank Mr., Wolcott on the currency question, but the Star’s article completed the job when it said: “The senator has evidently not changed his position. He 1 is still a Republican, and a National Re publican. He speaks for a national asl against a sectional or class spirit. The action taken in the caucus ot Democratic members of congress on the 14th promises mnuch more dignified, con sistent and effective work from that party during the present session, than it pre sented to the country six months ago The caucus decided with practical unanimity upon four points of policy, viz, resistance to anti-greenback legisla. tion, no extension of privileges to nation al banks, recognition of Cuban belliger ency, and in favor of a just and wise bankruptcy law. Now let them avoid mutual bair pulling on the floor of the house and personal references to each others's backshding in the past from Democratic principles and that party will go to the country next year with the cer tainty of winning perhaps a controlling mjority of the next congress.—Lead ville Herald-Democrat Advertisers Are Immortal.
