The death of Jonathan Harrington,
the last survivor of the battle of Lex
ington, who recently expired, at the
age of 95, vu announced in the Mas
sachusetts Legislature oo Tuesday, and
a large committee was appointed to
hooor his obsequies, which took place
last Thursday afternoon.
The Beventy-fifth anniversary o( the
battles of Lexington and Concord was
celebrated at the latter place on the
19th of April, 1850, on which occa
sion the following reference was made
to the venerable patriarch by Governor
Briggs :—
A young man in Lexington went out
. the evening before, and while on his
way passed several British officers and
soldiers who preceded the army that
came with the rising sun. He return
ed home ami went to bed ; about one
o’clock he was called up by his mother
who came to thedoor and said, ‘Jona
than ! the regulars are -coming, you
must get up, something'must be done!’
That was the Jonathan called by that
mother; and Jonathan got up, and what
did be do? What could that boy of
aixteeo years old do? 1HI tell you
wlmt he did. He got up and blew that
shrill little fife to rally the clans, to
alarm the neighbors, to assemble the
patriots.
Mothers of Massachusetts, do you
hear that ? “ The regulars are com
ings” but who were u the regulars ?”
The embedded power of fhe British
kingdom, disciplined, brave, obedient
soldiers, who went at dead of night tcf
drive back the rebels, and take stores
and araunition. And we there behold,
a mother of “ *76” routing her boy in’
'the depth of night, to M gut -up and do,
something, for the regulars are coming.
And he did do something;' he was at
ihe'batlle of Lexin»ton and acted-there.
He stood at the head ol the company,
by the brave hearted Parker, rousing
a martial spirit hi the hearts of his
countrymen by the shrffl notes of his
fife. Our friend here saw Pitcairn and
the soldiers marching up to (hem, and
saw their guns loaded with powder and
ball. He saw them inarch up to them
'with their imperious and threatening
air. He heard «the words, 1 Rebels,
disperse! Rebels, lay down yanrarmsP
He beard the cracking of the muskets.
Those eyes dim with the vision of a
hundred years, saw it; those ears heard
it; the heart, now feebly beating in that
venerable bosom, felt it; and his arm,
now helpless from age, helped to drive
‘the rebels Irom onr land. Thank Hea
ven that he is here to exhibit himself.
Elder P-, who whilom preached
«in a certain town ol this 4 kentry,’ was
so notorious for his queer pin ases and
very odd comparisons, that it finally be
hoved the ‘deacons’ to remonstrate with
him. The elder admitted the justice
of the charge brought against him ;
•promised to amend his speech hence
forward; and hoped that his ladings,
grievous though they were, would not
lx; ilie cause of any diminution in their
regard for him ; “ for, brethren,” said
he, 44 we always have hitched liorses
so lar, and I hope we may hitch horses
hereafter in the stables of eternal elo
