The Tendon stock 8kct was active and excited to-day, r.nd plte of ery heavy profit-taking In wrthcrn Pacific and the Grangers, a aub felltilkl ad:tnco was bhnvvn In Atnorlcin ip'.'ks, particularly United States Btecl ls- i, and was successfully maintained up . ine ciosc ffln the kcal market trading continued In femendcus clllme. and In snltp nf tho must rslstent realising, further heavy advances ere recorded. Tlie United States Steol stocks had un 'iher rise, and there seems J:t- Jle doub'. that Insiders consider them worth considerably more than present prices. A dividend of 1'4 per cent quarterly Is exposed un th common ftocki. Northern Pacific lost scm cf Its sensational rise, but T-as wonderfully well supported, while Union Pacifies and tile grangers were as popular as ever. In transactions of such magni tude It was dlfiicult to trace particular In terests, and all the commission houses seemed lo be buying stock. Atchison com mon and preferred were noticeably strong on the expectation of a 2 per cent .-semiannual dividend on the former. Huch a payment on the company's earnings may Justifiably be made. The strength in New Tork Central and tho other Vanderbilts In besinnlng to at tract attention, and many good judges arc Inclined to consider that In the interest ex cited by Northwestern deals 'he more stable Eastern roads have been neglected. It Is announced on good authority that the an thracite roads will mako'net advances of 10 cents per ton on anthracite monthly from the 1st of llay to the 1st of September, In clusive. The sale of the Lcyland Steam ship Company to J. P. ilorgan & Co. Is Confirmed, and Is expected to be tho first step In an aggressive export policy In steel and coal. The latest London rumor li that this purchase will be supplemented by tho American line and tho White Star, but this so far lacks confirmation. In spite of enormous profit-taking, the strength of the market was maintained up to the close, and the hard-coal stocks In particular were very strong on the expected advance In the pride of anthracite. Erics. Readings and Pennsylvania in particular .benefited by this announcement. Very strong 'lorces seemed to bo uenind speculation in United States Steel, and some very large blocks have been taken for London account. Money continued very easy. Tho volume of trading 'easily beat all previous records, and brokers wcro unable In many Instances to guarantee the execution of orders at the openlnc. . BOND SALES AT NEW YOItK.
