The shadow of the Northern Pacific excitement Is still hanelni; over the Ion don Stock Exchange. This, combined with th approaching holUlajs. ha brought American dealings during the last week practically to s, standstill, and home stocks were quiet in tjm path. Th action of the Stock Exchange Committee for General Purposes In suspending the buying In of Northern Pacific shares until June JO has been somewhat criticised on the ground that Uie bears had already bad more grace than wad ex pected. It la understood that a number have al ready covered, prices running up to 210. A sug gestion has also been made that the committee, refuse further protection except on transactions officially reported to them. It has further been pointed out that In this manner the true dimen sions of the short Interest could be seen and adn cuate steps taken to clear up. the situation. Thn resumption of normal conditions is impossible! until this la accomplished. A curious detelopment of the past week ha been that while tha Northern Pacific crista wa.i convulsing- the big- arbitrage houses, a smaller but very similar corner in London. Brighton and South Coast ordinary shares caught hair a dozen local brokers. The action of the stock Excbane Committee for General Purposes in the matter of the Northern Pacific settlement, furnished tha victims of tbo Brighton comer with a precedent, so dear to the Englishman.
