SUCKED POISONS THROUGH A STRAW. Mrs. Ada Heitland Attempted Sui cide With Laudanum and Carbolic Acid. Mrs. Ada Heitland. M years .old. of No. 150S Washington avenue, intending suicide, mixed carbolic acid and laudanum yester day afternoon at her home and drank & tumbler full of the combination, sucking It through a straw. The quantity of laudanum used was twice that of the acid. But for this fact her attempt would have succeeded. The al cohol in which the laudanum was In solu tion acted as a-counter Irritant to .the car bolic acid, deadening the latter-s effect. The acid acted' vice versa, rendering the lauda num practically harmless. After drinking the poison, Mrs. Heitland told an occupant of the-house, who ran for a policeman, and Mrs. Heitland. was taken to the City Hospital. The hospltal'physicians discovered the ef fects of carbolic acid only in that the woman's throat was bumed. She evidenced symptoms of drouslness, but her condition was not as serious as was expected. She said that she had used an ounce and a half of the laudanum. Her case was not con sidered serious, though it was said she had swallowed enough poison to kill four men. Mrs. Heitland declared she did not know what had prompted her to attempt suicide. "I was Just feeling bad. I had the car bolic acid and I bought the laudanum. I thought the. two together would surely end my life. There was a glass In the room, which had contained lemonade' and in which wag'a'straw. That afforded the sug gestion. I filled" the glass with the two 1 poisons, added a little water, and sucked up the stuff Just as' If it were lemonade." t?he said that her husband is Henry Heit land, and that he is employed at the Fried man Shoe Company.
