"o Attempt Was Made to Do
More Than a Give-and-Take
Business at Present.
New York, Sept. 5. The operations of
professional traders, to which buslneEH on
the Stock Exchange Is now almost wholly
confined, do not make more than a super
ficial Impression on the market. The ob
ject of the traders Is achieved if prices are
moved, whether In one direction or another.
"When the professionals perceive that in
selling- stocks they are getting into sparse
company, they turn with the utmost cheer
fulness to the buying side, as they did yes
terday and for a time tills morning, and.
when the buying demand shows diminishing
power and there seems danger of becom
ing loaded up with long stocks, they begin
to eell with equal alacrity, as they did this
afternoon. The news from day to day may
continue much the same without affecting
tbfe periodicity of the narrow fluctuations
It In such a market.
i- 'General Condition Good.
As a background to the market lie the
etrong general conditions of business, the
prospect that the Interruption to the pros
perous conduct of the steel Industry will not
be mnch longer continued, and the determi
nation with which controlling Interests !n
the -great properties cling to their holding.
It Is the obvious policy of large capital at
this time lo encourage active speculation,
pending tho clearing of the autumn money
requirements, and at the same time offer
IF effective support for prices of securities
IS. when threatened.
Writ Calls for Cash.
The principal development to-day was the
renewal of the Interior demand for currency.
There was deposited COO.OStt at the Sub
treasury for transfer to Chicago and $30,000
for transfer to New Orleans. Yesterday's
Bubtreasury operations yielded a small bal
ance to the banks on account of payments
for gold deposited at tho Pacific Coast
points, and there "were further payments for'
the same account to-day, but it Is obvious
that the.-current Government surplus will
render nugatory theso relieving Influences.
The Subtreasury had. In fact, taken $22a.
000 from the market up to last night, al
though the movement of currency to the
interior was suspended up to that time.
Tiie offerings of United States bonds for
redemption under the terms of the Secre
tary or the Treasury have slightly Increased
in the last few days, but they are Insignifi
cant -as an offset to the drain on account
of the 'Government revenues. ""Vail street

The weekly statements of both the Bank
of England and the Bank of Franca show
losses In gold reserves. -
Stocks Showed StrensTth.
To-day'sT early show of strength was con
fined to the coalers. Vanderbllts. grangers
and PadBcs, among the railroads, and SU-
gir and a few minor specialties among the
dustrlals. Brooklyn Transit was weak
throughout on the poor showing of July
net earnings. The market closed weak at
declines running up to : points. Railroad
bonds were Irregular in tone and dull. To
ut sales, par value, tM55,0C0. United States
bonds were unchanged on the last call.

Another Good and Active Day In Fl
nnnclal Circles Bates Steady.
Business in all departments of banking was
brisk and of large proportions jesterday. the
conditions asain being favorable. In a routine
way the proceeding at the Varou3 banks' and
trut companies were of a lUelv character, espe
cially checking and depositing, while business
with country banks was mest encouraging. There
was the usual good demand for money, which
was In ample supply, and a large amount was
leported loaned out at the old rates of 5 to
pr cent, on which basis call and time money
found employment.

THEY WANT FOURTH CAVALRY.
Business Men Renew Efforts to
Procnre Regiment.
At the monthly meeting of the Executive
Committee of the Business Men's League
at the Mercantile Club yesterday afternoon
a special committee was appointed to con
tinue the effort to procure the headquarters
and band of the Fourth Cavalry for Jeffer
son Barrack)-, and It was instructed to vig
orously push the matter. Many telegram
have already been forwarded to the War
Department.
J. E. I'ilcher. J. J. WcrHieimer nnd
George IV. Brown were appointed a special
committee to consider the ouestion of advo
cating a repeal of the tariff on hides. In a
recent Washington dispatch to TheHepub
llc It was stated that Eastern Congressmen
were backing such u repeal on the ground
of the Increase in the exportation of shoes
manufactured in this country.
It is claimed that European manufactur
ers have an advantage over their American
competitors. In that there Is a rebate allowed
on exported leather made from imported
hides.
Success was reported In the effort to se
cure enforcement of the flro escape ordi
nance. Chairman Nathan Frank of the Enter
tainment Committee reported that arrange
ments had been made for tho membership
meeting and dinner, to bo given at the 8t.

Six Men Held to Answer For His
Death.
' The lncpiest yesterday on tha body of
John O'nourke of Xo. 1137 South Third
street, who died at the City Hospital Tues
day from a stab wound, resulted In a ver
dict of unjustlflabln homicide. Herman and
Henry Bergman. Martin Bcrgholtz, Stephen
Johnson. William Carey and an unidenti
fied man were held responsible. Daniel Dec
ban was held as accessory.
O'Rourke was stabbed in the abdomen in
the course of a general fight at Third and
Miller streets) early Tuesday morning !th
a crowd ot men.

Washington. Sept. 3. Another effort will
be made by the administration authorities
lo hoodwink the old soldiers at the national
encampment, to be held nt Cleveland next
week. In order to prevent the adoption of
rcrolutions denouncing H. Clay Evans,
present Commissioner of Pensions, and the
practice of the office under his administra
tion. The story has again hscn started from of
ficial sources that if the encampment re
mains quiet upon the question of the ad
ministration's pension policy. Commissioner
Evans will shortly resign from office ami
Judge Peters of Kansas will be appointed
his successor. Those who are best Informed
place nb credence whatever upon this state
ment. They look upon it as an official fab
rication to act as a balm upon the wounds
of the old veterans. Commander Israel '.
Stone of the Department of the Potomac
gave out an Inspired Interview to-day upon
the question of the adoption of resolutions
denouncing the administration of II. Clay
Evans. Jlr. Stone is close to the adminis
tration, and it li generally believed hat
been selected for the purpose of preventing
tha adoption of any denunciatory resolutions
by the convention. In the course ot his in
terview, he says:
"I am In favor of making no mention of
the Pension Bureau In our encampment, for
the reason that the President has promised
that when the proper time comes a change
will be made in the office of Commissioner
of Pensions. In lew of that fact, I do
not see why we should have any discussion
of tho Pension Bureau.
Intended to Avert Action.
"It is well understood," he continued,
"that n man has been picked out by Presi
dent ilcKlnley to be Commissioner of Pen
sions. He Is former Representative S. It.
Peters of Kansas, who served four and a
half years In the Union Army, entered the
sen Ice as a private soldier nnd was mus
tered out as a Captain. He has served a
long term In Congress and has been a Judge
of a State court In Kansas. He lo In every
way well qualified to fill the post of Com
missioner of Pensions, and I am sure will
prove to be acceptable to the Grand Army
at large."
On the other hand. General Dan Sickles'
does not propose to delay action any longer.
He will lead one of the most bitter fights
against Commissioner Evans ever started
at an encampment. He is a potential and
powerful factor among the old veterans,
and it was largely through his Instrumen
tality that the' adoption of denunciatory
resolutions of the administration was pre
vented In 1KB at the Philadelphia encamp-

years since then. He was a fine gentleman,
