EFFORT TO BOLSTER UP MARKET FALLS SHORT. TRADING STILL CONFINED TO OBSCURE LINES. Prices Generally Start Ont Higher, but Barely Hold Their Own After a Dull Day. JCew York. March 2. To-day'a market made some effort to recover from the re actionary tendency that developed before the close Saturday and to resume the up ward tendency which was becoming gen eral on Friday. Prices started higher this mornir-c, but the market during tho day did not hold out tho promise of the early deal ings and again relapsed into a dull and drifting condition, with tho dealings almcet entirely in professional hands and only the more obscure stocks moving with any de gree of energy. There were a marked de mand for the Readings and an apparent at tempt to ehlft the leadership Into the coal ers from tho 'Western grain carriers whoss strength last week was supposed to be) due to tho favorable prospects of the grain crops. Obvious Selling to Take Profits. But the obvious fact that selling to take profits was going on In St. Paul, showing the work of professional hands, detracted from the influence of the new strength In the Readings. The renewed attendance at his olllce of the most prominent capital ist in the street and tho return to New Tcrk from holiday excursions of other large capitalists were looked to by the more san guine of the traders to result in a resump tion of market activity, but except for the buying of the Readings no such Influence was apparent. Amalgamated Copper was notably active, and. with occasional rallies, was depressed on account of a fear thut the Anaconda divi dend to be acted on this wesk will not be maintained. There was an active spec tuatlon :n tho United States Leather stocks at advances of a point or more, accom panied by reports zubeeojuently circulated that the accumulated dividends duo on the preferred stock were to be funded Into a bend. Louisville and Nashville, and Chica go. Indianapolis and Louisville rose togeth er in the trading, thus reviving old rumors of a combination. llarlxet Spotty arid Ixresralar. Outside of these oases; the market wa spotty and uneven and very irregular. There were wlds advances In Evansvlllo and Terre Haute. North American. General Electric, com Products and Keokuk and Des Moines preferred, but nons. of th gains were fully maintained, and there wera wide declines in other stocks, which had recent advances. Colorado Fuel was activo and erratic, ranging both above and below Saturday's closing, with a net gain of a point. Soothing assurances were heard that the condition of the money market was per fectly safe, but the forces of depletion at work upon the cash reserves of the banks and the narrow margin of their surplus re serve kept awake an uneasy sentiment re garding the condition of ths market until the April settlements. With the Subtreas ury taking funds from tha market, an In terior demand for currency and sterling ex change again hardening towards the gold export point, it is felt that there la danger of flurries in the money market, even if a sustained stringency eon be avoided. The market closed heavy. The bond market was irregular, but the active issues were in clined lo recede. Total sales, par TSlue, tl,73),000. United States bonds were all un changed on tho last call. 8TATEMENT OP THE CONDITION OP The National Bank of Commerce in St. Louis. sasBa afBBBaMisMlMaiBaHeaHBla FEBRUARY 25th. Tractions Easj and General Tono of Market Apparently Bearish. Trust company issues were under selllnc pressure in the local securities market yes terday. Recent advances seem to have tempted many outside speculators to take profits desplto statements that the tendency toward consolidation would ultimately strengthen the business of this class of concerns In St. Louis. Tractions were easy and bank shares were about the only strong spots. In the fore noon Transit sold oft from $30.8754 to S.e24 and United Railways preferred was easy at JS5.75 and S&.S0. Gerraania Trust dropped from S3&50 to J20S and Colonial sold oil to CJ4. There was no trading In Missouri. At one time tho stock brought out no better bids than J12S, but there were bujers willing; to take it at JUT at the close. American Central and Lincoln were steady, the former at $169 and the latter at $ST0- There was a eood demand lor all of the Simmons Harwaro lsbues at higher prices. At ths afternoon session Transit was aeain weak at $30.00 and $30-374- Tho trust company Issues were little better than steady. St. Louis Safe Deposit and Savins was In good demand, but held too 'high for buyers.
