BULL STOCK BROKERS TAKE UP AGGRESSJVE CAMPAIGN. ST. PAUL USED AS A LEADER FOR HIGHER PRICES. Obvious Profit-Taking in Missouri Pacific Tends to Retard Movement. New York. July H. The speculative operators In favor of higher prices for stocks took hold of the market with re newed vigor to-day, centering their cam paign in St. Paul. That stock has always been peculiarly effective as a leader, owlns to Its representative character amongst the Western trunk lines and to the large float ing supply In the market. Its notable rise to-day. threfore, had some sympathetic ef fect on stocks of Its own class. The mass of securities, however, remained singularly unresponsive to tho aggressive strength of St. Paul, and even sagged in spots from torpid demand. In the early market the effect of the St. Paul movement was inter fered with by the obvious profit-taking go- ii un in jii33uuri i-tfcmc. ana mo susp:ciOn thus aroused that the St, Paul manipula tion was expressly desicned to facllltnta this profit-taking. There were also weak spots nmongEt the Industrials. The decline from Saturday's level reached a point in Missouri Pacific. Sugar and Amalgamated. Atchison responded early to the St. Paul riso and followed it closely throughout the day. but it was not until late that Union Pacific, and still later when Southern Pa cific came into the movement. The St. Lonls-SonthireBtern Active. The St. Louis-Southwestern stocks and Illinois Central were also conspicuous. A reference to the day's rales list will show that the stocks above specified made up the principal portion of the day's market. As each stock was successively brought for ward into the movement, the buvlng took on large proportions. Blocks of trom a thousand to G.tWO shares were dealt in free ly in all of the active issues. The weak stocks generally recovered ana closed unchanged or at slight losses. An effort was made to advance the Readings, hut at was not pursued. Much was made in connection with the advance of hopeful talk of crop prospects, and no account was taken on the signs of the strength in grain markets, based on reports of unwelcome rales in the Southwest. The grain markets aro not considered a reliable barometer of actual crop conditions, owing to the dis turbance of abnormal conditions by specu- Speonlatl -re Mind I Confnaed. It must bo considered also that the specu JaUve mind Is much confused in following the statistical rectification in the Oovern ments crop acreage figures in the attempt to conform the Agricultural Department's figures to the census returns. The favor able bank statement on Saturday was urged as an evidence of easing conditions of the money market, but money rates were not appreciably easier here to-day and foreign exchange advanced a fraction again.
