Mrs. Hayes of Philadelphia, and Mrs. Joseph Gettys of St. Louis, have appeared in some very hand some gowns, for coaching, dinner and the triweekly hops, while a party of Milwaukee prls wear shirt waists and short woolen skirts to the exclusion of all else. I was much amused the other day to overhear a Chicago woman. whor pjnctUIous regard for what to wear and when to wear It Is most noticeable, say to a Milwaukee miss. who goes about with sleeves rolled up and a hatless head: "My dear, do 1ft me tell you that every body ears a bat here in Glenwood." I always do exactly as I please, and I please not to wtr a hat." WALTER TOWNSEJJD RELATES STORY Walter Townsnd ran Into tho writing room last night for a minute. He adarrsSiU two letters to Prince Cupid and Priac Somebodyeisi sons of the Queen of the Pnluppian Islands, and then tela me that they were introduct-onsi for Miss Delia Knutt. who Is about to launch a coxmc opera company In Manila, going over trout Sn Francisco, where 3e wealthy r-.ir i ailing as angel. MUs Knott was with Wil liam Gillette two years ago. Before taking his train to Salt Lake. Mr. Townsend found time to tcU me a good Joke on himself wtlch had Just narptned that afternoon. With a party of Milwaukee friends he had gone out riding through the mountam roads and into the village. Now, tncre s a fine State bridge leading across the river from the town to the Colorado Hotel, and woe be unto him who dares to cross that bridge faster than a walk! The County Judge sits at the town end in a tower with a spyglass to his eye. both by day and by night, and if a horse so much as canters three steps, behold, there Is a Deputy ShsriS waiting at his brtJ.e where he gets over the nver. Mr. Townsend. hav ing visited Glenwood before, was supposed to know all about this rule and regulaLon. The Milwaukee people were tenderfeet and bUsstully ignorant. They all. ladies as well as men. galloped down the road after mounting from the hotel porie cochere. and acros; the bridge before you could say Jack Robinson. But the Deputy Sheriff wa waiting for them, oh, dear, yes; and up they were, obliged to go before the ex ponent. Here Mr. Townsend was unanimously elected spokesman. He proved valiantly equal to the emergency. Throwing out h.s chest, tossing oft his sombrero, and as- surning a confident manner, he approached the upright Judge., leaned on the bar of Justice, smiled conndingly and proceeded to ' do his beat to clear the party. His trump argument was the fact that the Milwaukee people were making their tec vlstt to Glenwood only a preliminary, and all of them expected to ccme back again This wn. The Judge found his conver fktion so convincing that he agreed to .et them all off 11 but one. He thereupon pro ceeded to Place a flne of J5 and costs upon Mr. Walter B.
