FOR Later in the Day When New Low Records Are Made, Entire Mar ket Feels the Weight. Xew Tork, Nor. 5 The persistent weakness In the United State Steel se curities to-day vraa a weight npon the whole stock market. The repressive ef fect was evident at the outset when the stocks of both classes and the second bonds oil opened at lower prices than ever before. But the Influence was re sisted for a time except for a few stocks affiliated with the Iron and steel trade. During the forenoon the effect on the railroad list was hardly perceptible and a number of railroad stocks held above last night's level. Dividends came off a number of important stocks this morning: and the appearance of cheapness thus produced perhaps encouraged some bid ding up. Both Pennsylvania and Atchi son were In this class. Amalgamated Chop per also offered some resistance In the early part of the day, apparently putting forward on the court calendar of the liti gation In Montana. CLOSE IS TVEAK. The whole market yielded, however, xln the late dealing; and the closing was weak with many of the standard railroad stocks a point below lasfnlght. The industrials and specialties showed even wide declines. In the outpouring of United States Steel stocks In the late dealings the price of the common touched lOTi, of the preferred 51H and of the second bonds 6S;. These compare with last night's price of 12 for th. frtmmnn KTa: fnr the nreferred and 67T4 for the second bonds. The slump' In these securities after the long contin ued decline, which they have already un dergone let loose a flood of rumors and conjecturea Some of these were colored with a sensational tinge, but the convic tion was very general in the street that the situation In the Iron and steel trade was very, discouraging and that condi tions were much upset. Sales were made In the outside market of the next divi dend on United States Steel common at & of 1 per cent on several thousand shares. Reports of cuts in steel products" were very contradictory, but the decision to make a price of 3 a ton for steel billets compared with the recent price of C'vas- known on authority.'' - RETRBNCKSIEXT PLANS. There were rumors in addition of com ing cuts In steel rails and In other lines of finished product, of reductions In wages throughout the Industry and of the dis charge of large forces of worklngmen. The announcement of the resignation of one of the executive officials of the cor poration was used as a basis for rumors of official friction widely extended, and of a coming extensive reduction in the ex ecutive forces for purposes of economy. Officials were reticent regarding all theso rumora so that the professional traders who followed the movement In the stocks were left to choose for themselves be tween the fact and fiction. The reports of some heavy sales of the corporation's product in foreign markets gave no help to the stocks, as they were accepted as, indicating the downward course of prices with a view to extending export trade. The West and South took rOCWO of cur rency to-day In continuation of the outgo and sterling exchange weakened again. Tlitmnr wpro ftffnln rimtlatpd nf further engagements of gold for importation, but' tney were unsubstantiated, me Hank of England retrained from advancing its dis count rate, end the price of gold was slightly lowered In London. WHEAT. There was a renewal of the selling pres sure In Dec. wheat which has character ized trading the past few dajs at the start, and during the opening hour that delivery declined to a point below what May was selling at. News was again de cidedly bearish before the opening, cables being generally weak, receipts larger and weather favorable, and many traders seemed inclined to dispose of their hold ings. St. Louis houses sold freely early in the day, .and after opening unchanged to Jc lower at 7S',;c to 7SV$c Dec quickly de clined to TT'ic. There was a good demand for Hay throughout the entire session, and that month was comparatively firm and tended to support the near-by option. The Ohio State report was somewhat bull ish and brought out fair buying orders from local traders and shorts toward the noon hour, and a reaction set In w hlch re sulted in c recovery of most of the early loss. Complaints from reliable sources contin ued to come In regarding the poor condi tion of the corn crop, and, with general commission-house demand, the sentiment was quite bullish. Buying by provision in terests was a feature in the trading. Sell ing was of light volume and principally by small traders. Mexican dollars 45c Government There was a general Improvement In the tone of the local grain market yesterday.-" The previous day's selling practically exhausted the offerings and the weather arid crop conditions were more bullish than they had been for several days. Foreign mar kets were unexpectedly strong and there was a decided improvement in the cash and export inquiry. The upward movement was further aided by light local and primary recclpts and the speculative strength of corn. The volume of trading was light and there was practically no activity in Dec. wheat, which was permitted to sag. May was the strong spot throughout the session. There had been a good deal of overselling and the shorts were anxious to cover -y-hen It became apparent that a good many outsiders considered the price low enough to justify further purchase. Chicago and the Northwest were strong and It was reported that some of the big professionals in those markets who had been on the selling side were quietly adding to their lines. Lower temperature and prospects of rain Icptjthe corn market on the advance Receipts were light and there was a fair cash and export demand. May wheat opened MSSc off. and closed sjc up. " May corn opened c up and closed fie up. May oats closed liS?ic up. r Receipts of produce were moderato and prlce3 of fruits and vegetables wcrt gen erallr steady. . GRAINS CLOSE HIGHER WITH INCREASED DEMAND. FOREIGN WHEAT MARKET SHOWS STRENGTH. Unfavorable Weather and Light Receipts Are Factors ia the Corn Market. In the local grain market both wheat and corr recovered a portion of the previ ous day's losses. Conditions were gener ally bullish, and there was better outside support than for some time. Some of the shorts who sold Wednesday were anxious to buy back and other domestic markets were generally strong. Receipts were mod erate and temperatures were lower throughout the belt Foreign prices were strong, considering the recent domestic weakness. May wheat opened H6?ic oft and sold at: 7g73c, 79c. 794c 79Sc. 734c 73c 73c TJ .c. 80c 79-teSOc. 79c 80c 80c. 80c 79 30c. Com was strong on small receipts and unfavorable weather. There were pros pects of rain In many portions of the belt. The movement to this and other markets was slow.
