Se eral cantatas and programmes of an thems are to bo given during Uie winter. 1'or to-morrow night's service James T. Quarles, the organist and cnolrmastcr, has rehearsed a choir of twenty -voices, all of them well trained In a music way. WELLS. In Kentucky, that land of caves, there are livers that spring In full volume from the earth, only, after miles of eurfacc flow, to sink suddenly into the earth again. Equally mysterious, in its origin and its departure, was the life of Elijah, of whose history up to manhood we are told not a word. As we see the prophet standing before King Ahab. and foretelling the famine as a punishment for the national sins, we ee why he is placed next to Moses as a lowering Hebrew figure he also was a man of supreme faith in God. No wonder that he and Moses, alter nine centuries, . Blood on the Mount of Transfiguration conversing with him who was the em bodiment of faith, and that to whom all faith points.. Elijah trusted God in poverty, such deep poverty -as none of -us are Hkelv to know; and the ravens fed him. In these dajs of Dakota wheat fields -and steam cars God does not need to work a miracle to feed his Elijahs, but. though the ra vens are not repeated for us, the feeding Is. and that Js the essential thing. The most lovely lesson In trust In oil the life of this prophet of trust was taught by a woman, the widow who snared , with Elijah her last bit of food, and was ' rewarded, with the life of herself and the resurrection of her ron. Is your cruse of comfort failing? .Rise, and share it with another. And through all tho yean of famine ' It shall feed 'yon and your brother. Grace divine shall All your storehouse. And your earner still renew; r '. Scanty Jars for one will often V Make a royal znea for two. if Elijah's life of trust is compared to a .river, the stupendous scene on .Mount Car mel Is a cataract, a leap of faith such as the world had not seen before. Again, in these days of ballots and printing presses, God does not need to send Are from heaven to aid us In our .combat with evil, but. he nias us Just as really as he, aided Elijah. After the Niagara, tho whirlpool! The prophet who could contend undaunted with -450 priests of Baal Is running away for fear of a womanl It was a whirlpool of black depression and doubt in which Elijah's life was swallowed up and could not get out. He needed to trust men as well as God. He needed to learn that he was not the only stanch soul; that there were CO-DO others. He needed to learn that God lias many ways of work not merely with fire, as on Mount Carmel. nor merely with earthquake, as on Mount Horeb in the time of Moses, but with the still, raiall voice, the quiet unfolding of influ ence. But Elijah trusted God. even In the whirlpool of doubt, and God led his life out cf It. Finally, Elijah trusted God In the hour of death, and his reward was translation. (The river of his life did not sink Into tho earth again, but was drawn upward into Hie sky. to float away In clouds of glory. Such, in all essentials, is the death of the trusting Christian. God does not send the chariot, but he sends the vision. JEWS OF THE CITY CIIDItCnES. Ruling: Elders of St. Louis Prcaby tcrian Chnrckcs Will Confer.
