The stock market was submerged again to-day under a del uge or United States Steel stocks. The general list, however, responded much less readily to the depressing Influence of the Fteel liquidation than was the case yester day. Whenever the severe pressure on the steel stocks was suspended, as hap pned at Intervals, the railroad stocks ral lied easily, so that their level of prices was above last night for about as much of the lime as It was below. The market closed In one of the Intervals when there was no pressure on steel, so that prices elsewhere were rising and were well above last night. Union Pacific and Pennsylva nia show a gain of a point on the day and some of the New Tork corporation stocks somewhat more. SELLING IS VIOLENT. The early liquidation In the steel shares was very violent, as Is shown by the fact that the sales of the preferred for the first hour alone were well above 100.000 shares. It Is riot to be supposed that this enormous volume of dealings "was wholly liquidation. The room professionals trad ed in and out of the stocks on a very large tcale all day. It was said of one trader who was very active in the stoek all day that ho was neither long nor short for iiium man ten minutes at a time, while the aggregate of his Individual dealings amounted to many thousands of shares. The low price touched Tor the common block was 1014. for the preferred 52 and for the bonds C57i. The relatively greater weakness of the preferred stock than the bonds was noticeable In view of the sup posed, conversion operation by the syndi cate, which would involve the purchase of preferred stojk for conversion Into bonds, Jjn'ch would In consequence be for sale. It was natuial that such enormous selling should he so general In character as to lack especial slgnficnnce, or to olter any clew as to the Identity of the princi pal seller" The street had all sorts ot rumors of forced liquidation, s-lllng by Insiders to dis count a reduction In the dividend rate, etc The liquidation came rrom various sources. Chicago, Nov. 6. After ruling weak the greater part of- the day. wheat turned firm on a better export demand, and closing prices showed a fair advance, Dec. being up 4c. Dec. corn was 4c high er, oats ware up Wc but provisions were weak, thc Jan. products closing from 57Hc to 20c lower. WHEAT. Firm cables caused a better tone In wheat at the start, and Dec. opened a shade to Uvic higher at 78o to 78c. Confirmation of a report that a million bu. of No. 1 Northern had been chartered at Duluth to come here brought out quite general liquidation early In the session and the market turned weak, Dec. sell ing off to 77c within the Ilrst hour of trading. On the decline there was a good demand from shorts and commission houses, and with lessened 'offerings prices again started upward. The strength In corn was a Dull factor during the latter fun ui iiiu uy, as were nigner prices in outside markets, at a fair advance at St. Louis. Reports of over 80 boatloads taken for export caused a nhnm rioman.l trnm shorts during the last few minutes' trad ing, and closing prices w-ere at the top ItSJSlo,",' l5 aay- Dec- oe'ne up 4o at i8?4i8?4c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 4,800 bu. Primary receipts were 1.342,000 bu., against 3.595.2CO bu. a year ago. Exports of wheat and flour for the week were equal to 4.310.000 bu., com pared with 5,715.000 bu. last year. Minne apolis and Duluth reported receipts of S65 cars, which, with local receipts of 107 cars none of contract grade made total receipts for the three points of 973 cars, against 92-1 cars last week and 1.0SS cars a year ago. CORN. The sentiment In the corn pit was bull ish and the market ruled strong. There were reports from Nebraska and other sections of the corn belt, showing a good dpal of soft grain, and the theory on which the local crowd was working was that In another week or ten days tho pressure from the old com would be over and this poor corn would then begin to come on the market. Commission-houses were active buyers, but offerings were on.y moderate. After selling between MUc Hyrfmc. Local receipts were 277 cars, with 23 of contract grade. OAT3. Oats were strong, particularly the Dec option, which was Influenced largely by a strong cash situation, and tho strength of the near-by delivery helped the more distant ones. The bullish feeling In corn Influenced a good deal of buying by the local crowd. The close was at the top, with Dec Jio higher at SSftc, after rang ing between 3oc and 3594c. SUMMARY OP THE ST, LOUIS MARKETS, Another manipulative advance in the Dec. option was not the only strong spot In yesterday s grain market. May also had considerable support and the feeling was more generally bullish than li had been for several das. Weather conditions and foreign news were the principal legitimate factors in the advance. Rains had fallen In many sections of thf West. Tho movement to market was only moderate anil stocks In store were on tho decline. Ll,;ht Argentine shipments and higher Kuropenn markets, coupled with comparatively large exports, caused considerable covering by shorts in the List hour. This market was strengthened by the action of Chiciiso. whero the shorts were good buyers throughout the session. It was said that some of the StjLouis crowd were sellers there, but this had little effect on the local situa tion. The market was somewhat draggy In the opening hours, but tonard the cIofo all offerings wero eagerly snapped up nnd the bulls made a runaway race of It at the close. Corn, was dull but slightly higher on the strength of wt weather and bad husking reports from many sections. As nn offset to this bullish Information there were pri vate estimates that the roming Government report would indicate a yield of more than 2,000.000,000 bu. Cables were higher and clearances were fairly large. May wheat opened !4c up and closed lHSlUc up. May corn opened ',4c up and closed c up. May oats closed VtlfVc up. Receipts of produce were In fair volume and prices of fruits and vegetables were steady to easy. Local securities were dull and lower. Traction Issues declined under slight selling pressure.
