The agency was established for one year with a choice ot continuing the work for three years, if deemed necessary, but while It is .slated that the labors of tho agency have been satisfactory the desire of the lines inteiested Is to curtail ex penditures as much as possible. Information was received yesterday by those interested In the Cane Belt Railway of Texas that a "gusher" oil well had been struck at Matagorda, the terminus of that road. Although Matagorda is COO miles from the oil region of Texas, the Indications of oil induced capitalists and prosjiectors to bore for It there. The first borings re sulted in an outpouring of gus so powerful "st0 wr-'"k the pipe which forms the well, and it was then decided that this gas power should be utilized In the dig ging of the other wells by running the engines with it. At a meeting of the Executive Commit tee of the Terminal Association jesterday plans for the connection" of the Rock Is land with the Terminal tracks were dis cussed as presented by Vice President B. Lu Stevens, and with but few changes wete favorably considered. The Rock Island has a trackage lease oyer the Wabash, but It is not believed that It will give up this lease, but will use the Belt Une. in addition to the Wa bash tracks, for its entrance to St. Louis next year. A trust deed of J6OJ.O0O was filed to-day with the County Recorder, to cover an Issue of bonds to this amount by the Mississippi Valley Traotion Company. This company has taken over the property of the .Mollne, East Mollne and Watertown Railway Com pany, operating between Mollne and Wa tertown, and plans are made to extend branches as far north as Port Byron and as far east as Rock River next year. The trouble arose over K.000 which Heckle had Invested for 'Ml?. Crane. She wished to sell the bonds in which her money had been placed and wanted tho money value of the securities turned over to her Immediately. She said she would not surrender the bonds. Heckle states, until the money was handed to her. Circuit Judge Blevins yes(crday directed that C. E. Miller and D. J. Boylo be brought bsfore him to show causa why thcV should not be punished for contempt of court for causing to be flled a forged paper purporting to be the entry of ap pearance of Ida May Hllllard. whose hus band, John J. Hllllard. Is suing for di vorce. The order was based upon an affidavit filed ytsterday by Hllllard. who avers that the signature of his wife in tho en try of appearance Is not in her writing. The entry of appearance purports to liave been swoin to before 15oylo as a notary July 3. , Hllllard engaged Boyle to secure a di vorce for him. and Boyle employed Miller to represent him as an attorney. Deputy Sheriff Joseph T. KIlers was as signed to bring Miller and Boyle Into court, but he said ho was unable to find them. Appoints Chief Mechanical Engineer. Water Commissioner Adklns yesterday appointed iouis Jv. Hammer to tho posi tion of chief mechanical engineer. This will place Hammer in charge of all three stations Baden, Blssell's roint and the Chain of Ilocks. The appointment Is a promotion, as Hammer had charge of Baden, and has been in the department about fifteen years. Tho salary of the po sition is J2.300 a year. Kelly, charged with bribery In connection with the lighting-bill scan dal, was yesterday continued until De cember 21 by Judge Taylor. Thomaa J. Rowe, chief counsel for Kel ly, stated that ho Tas not ready to try the case this week or next, as ho Is pre paring for tho defenso of Police Captain Sam Boyd in tho Federal Court next week. The case of Slate Senator Frank Farris, which was on the docket for trial yester day, went over to tho next term ot court. Circuit Attorney Folk was ready for trial, but the defense was not. Charges of brib ery and perjury aro pending against Sen ator Farris. It is alleged that he accept ed a $1,000 bill for his vote on the alum bill at the Laclede Hotel. Grand Fair and Turkey Raffle.
