MWliat Joseph anil Benjamin Teacix Abont Brotherly Care." (Gen. xllll. S8 31, 34; 14 22.) Union Meeting: With the Junlora. BY AMOS R. WELLS. No one knows God as his .Father unless he knowx God's children as Ills brothers. It TTorlcs both ways. The mere tra truly nallzs Qol's fatherhood and rejoice In It, v mt&JEvT!THB& .- H -. . i. iz. the mnre we shall realize and rejoice In our human brotherhood, and the fore m f Know ana 'ove and help a our bri tHr-. the more we shall know "and love our Heavenlv father. It is eas-v to talk about the fatherhood of GrMl and tho brotherhood of men. hut th words are nniv a hypocritical phrac unless thev accompany deeds of brother hood. The tinmp was right, in the well known dialogue: "Is God your father?" he asked of the lady. "Yes." "And mine, too?" "Yes." "Then I am your brother:" "Y-e-s." "Then give your hrother a sllc if hrnrt and butter, and spread the butter en thick." "Ian Maclaren." In a noble wmon on The Gospel of Altruism.' says: "I plead with voti to take an Interest in the affairs of other people, because they are your own affairs " Does a drunkard He In the gutter" It is tho honor of your own fam ily that Is at stake. Is a girl falling into the snare of a wicked man? It is your own sister who Is going wrong. Is a young man launching out on the difficult sea of life? Bear a hand, there, for the boat Is carrying vour own brother on a prosper ous or a disastrous cmtee. Tne mm that "tends to hii own affairs" is the man that 'elfrnts nothing human foreign to him.' Of course, we nrat not neglect our own Interests. If Jor nh had not saved corn In Egvpt for himself and Pharaoh, he would have had none with which to save Ben 1amln and Jacob. But our primarv object In caring for our own Interests should not be the saving of ourselves, but of our brothers. As Mrs. Charles urged: Cn make th'r rardn fair as thou eint. TIhiu workrst neier alone Irclianr he whos plat Is nxt to thine Will we It. and mend fcls own. The greatest and most blessed of the Christian paradov.es Is this, that what we keep we lose, what we give we have. There is no more Important secret of success In life than this maxim of brotherhood. A man rises, not as he is nulled by patroniz ing hands reached from above, hut as be is pushed upward by the eager, loving thrust of his brothers, around him and below him. The surest way out of anv trouble ! to help some brother in trouble. Are you tempted? Go. labor with other sin-smitten souls. Has death taken your dear onc? As you wipe away the tears of others vour own will ceae to flow. That same Mr? Charles has expressed the truth In one o" the finest of Christian lyrics: I thy cruro of comfert wasting? Ri and share it with arother. And throuch all the yevn of fanirn. It shall serve the and thy brothtr. Is thT burden hard and hravy? Im thy step drag wcartlj ? Hip to hear lay brother's burden; Cod will brar both it an! thee. Those that are their brothers' )tecrrs ore kept by their rather in heaven. SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICES. It was followed fcy othr teachings on fcr-Slvcnes-s anil faith, the comlnjr of the kin-Mom. and the matter of divorce, inter spersed with deeds of power and mercy, the raising of Lazarus, the healing of the ten lepers, and interviews with the Phar isees, with the rich young ruler, the bless ing of little children, and the fondling of tho crucilixion. Tho record of ail this mav be found in Iike. chanters 1C to 13. and In chapter h of John, all of which the student srould read before beginning the lesson of the day. The fragments of his tory. Dot together without any apparent design bv- the evangelists, nerrrthcles-s form on interesting and continuous narra tive. Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem then, not far distant where would be en acted the tragic events connected with tho close of his earthly career. AMBITIOUS RKQl'EST-tVerses 35. 3S. 17.) The disciples; knew of tho crucifixion of their .Master, livr he had told them. (Verse 33.) Still, they believ-eel in him as the Messiah, the one who should restore the kingdom of Israel (Acts I. 6). and bad at that time no true conception of his per son and mission. It K difficult to say how they reconciled the Idea of his death with that of his temporal sovereignty, but it Is evident they thought In ome way he would assume the kingly office on reach ing Jerusalem. Two of the number, brothers In the flesh, determined If possi ble to gain Prominence In that kingdom, desiring to hold official positions of high rank. They seem to have forgotten what he had said concerning that kingdom, and they mav have been Incited to ambition by the discussion which had taken place among the twelve In the way. (Mark tac 21.) However. James and John, the latter reputed to have been the most affioctlonate and so peculiarly dear to the Lord (John xiii. 33). boldlr and privately approached and asked that they might sit one on his right hand and one en his left. SEARCHING QUESTION (Verse S.) This self-seeking did not call forth the Lord'.-t rebuke. He must have known enough of human nature to understand the source of the request. It might have been In part prompted by their love, their" desire to be closely Identified as loyal friends with their admired Master when he came to his honor and power. Jesus gently informed them that thev did not know what they asked; that the request was wholly out of harmonv with his mis sion and with theirs. And then to bring them. If possible, to a, better state of mind. pn.Imbly to recall them to thoughts of his suffering already announced, and of its deep an.l r.wful meaning, he questioned them. Could they drink the cup of which he must drink? (Matt. xxvl. 33.) Could they b b-iptlied with his baptism? The two sacraments, one of consecration, tho other of sacrifice, were thus prevented as modes by which the disciple might be come as his Lord. (Matt. x. 25.) It was vastly more Important that James and John should be Christlike than they should hold honorable position. Their character would determine their station. REFUSED HONOR (Verses 3 and 4a) These faithful words of Jesus were not enough to set the ambitious disciples In their right attitude. Assuming that tho cup and baptism were alone necessary they declared their acceptance of both, thinking possihiv that their request would be --ranted. They were willing: to submit to pain and suffering in order to reacli po sition. More faithful teaching was there fore needed. What they accepted eo cheerfully would come to them, but it would not purchase what thev desired. In deed, that could not be purchased at any price. Neither was It In the power of Christ to give. Administrator of the new covenant, sovereign In the kingdom wjilch ho had come to establish, there were yet prerogatives which had not been conferred upon him. One of them was the be stowal of the exalted place sought by these two men. That will be given to those) for whom It Is prepared. It was not a matter of favoritism and of privilege, but of di vine purpose and fitness. The curtain Is drawn and the names are not disclosed, nnd to this day no one knows who is to be thus honored. DISPLEASED DISCIPLB-vVers-J ) thnt had thus transpired became known to the ten. Did James or John relate the Incident? DM Jesus refer to it? Did someone overhear the conversation? TVe do not know how the Information was ob tained, but a new disclosure In human nature was presented as the facta came out. The ten were not less ambitions than the two. Thev felt that thero had been unwarranted liberty taken in an attempt to secure what each one of them might de sire, that there had been sharp practice to settle by special favor whit had been freely discussed by all in a rather heated and protracted manner.. (Matt. Jtvlll. L) In otrr day this would have beeen lookod upon as a trick, like that In which poli ticians sometimes Indulge. Why not let Jesus settlo the matter himself uninflu enced? Why proceed in a sly private way to secure his decision? These and other questions doubtless came up, and the t6n were arrayed against two. a good large majority against 'a small minority, Ave to one In opposition and displeasure. WORLDLT POSrnON-fVcrse -11) It was time for Jesus to Interpose. The apostolic band just outside of Jerusalem a few days distant from the crucifixion must not be divided Into quarreling factions over a question involving- matter-" of no moment. If possible they must be brought together. They must stand a unit In the last hours. But that was no easy task. The Master resorted to an extreme meas ure that ought to have been successful, but It was nou for the same old dispute came up again, even In the upper room. (Luke xxll. J4.) Nevertheless, he told thm here that the matter of preferment nnd honor belonged to worldly kingdoms among the Gentiles. What they were seeking, and all reeking together, was purely secular, a distinction that arose among lords and rulers of the government on earth. This was the same as to say to them that he was sorry to see a dis play of such dispositions among his fol lowers, ejulte unbecoming and unprofitable. This stntement re-nllv put the chief blame where it belonged unon James and John, who had caused the debate. CHRISTIAN GREATNESS (Verses 43 and 44.) Is there then no precedence, no pre-eminence In th-s kingdom of heaven? Are all Its members on a dead level, no cne greater than another? In one sense. It was Christ's purpose to make all his fol lowers equals (Matt xzill. S) as best suited to the formation of exalted character, brethren In one household. But there Is a possible and desirable Inequality. One may be In good sense above another, greater than another. Ana that state Is to be at tained, not by place or title, or honor, or emolument, hut by service. He who wriuld be thief of all must be servant of all. This Is the wav the gospel gmdes men. At the bottom are thoso who live for themselves to the Inlsrv of others (Luke xil. 13). above them are those who return to others what has been fraudulently taken (Luke xlx. S) and at the top those who Jnbor. using their substance to bless their fellow- men. (Heb. xiii. IS.) Thus there was placed before each apostle the highest Ideal and the strongest incentive to a good life. DIVIND PATTERN (Verse 43.) The teaching of Jesus was not yet complete. There was needed a sanction of his wonts that should "Ive them force, an Illustra tion which they might understand and which would remain with them operative In all after life. He therefore selected himself ns example, worthy of imitation. Thev admired and loved him. They had gathered about him and liad desired to serve him. Now he would have them know the secret principle of his ov-jv life, which they might make the principle of their lives. He had come Into the world not for wealth, or honor, or position, not to receive anything which anyone might give blm. He had studiously avoided re ceiving anything at the hands of any man. But he had como to minister, to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and Instruct the Ignorant. He had spent all his days in this kind of service. And at the end he expected to give us his Ufa a ransom for alL (Matt. xx. 3.) Thus he made the cross the sublime end and emblem. (Gal. vi. HO REFLECTIONS See how far removed Is the ordinary Christian from the Ideal of Christ. After nearly three years of asso ciation with the Master, during which time he had faithfully and repeatedly taught them the truths of the kingdom and the essentials of holy living, these twelve men. selected to be the head of the churcb. failed to comprehend him. They differed from the great body of the Jews only in this they thought he was the Mes siah: but. like the Jews, they thought the Messiah would be a temporal prince. This has been the trouble through all the cen turies; a failure on the part of men to form correct Ideas of the Christian sys tem. As a result we have had a perverted and corrupted Christianity, ometlines :&... v ..di MUNYON'S WITCH HAZEL SOAP Makes the skin soft as velvet. Improves any complexion. Best shampoo made.
